Chapter 21

WE KEPT WALKING, NOT stopping until the remains of the old castle were well from our view, hidden behind a wall of gnarled trees and tall grass, before we finally halted our retreat, taking a breather.

Kerry, who was braced against Finn as he supported her weight, was the first to speak.

“What was that thing? A demon or something?”

Finn gently set her down close to Cadeyrn, mindful of the injury to her left leg and hip sustained when she was pushed into the hole. Her hungry eyes followed him as he walked the short distance to Cadeyrn, ignoring the lustful looks that Kerry was shooting him as he went.

The girl was ruthless in her hunt for male prey. Not that I blamed her for noticing the Viking-like God of a man, with his warrior’s body and deep, rumbling voice that would make even a nun experience a wet dream. I don't know why, but I felt a pang of jealousy in the pit of my stomach at the thought of Finn giving in to her advances, secretly hoping he would shoot her down when she, inevitably, went in for the kill.

Does that make me a bad person?

Cadeyrn hissed as he pulled the shirt back, revealing a long gouge in his side. It had stopped bleeding but was still a nasty cut that would need to be bandaged and cleaned so infection wouldn't set in. He growled at Finn as he got closer, trying to take a look at the damage. "It was a dark Fae. Part of the Unseelie court and hell-bent on causing destruction everywhere it goes."

I watched as Cadeyrn slapped away Finn's advances as he tried to assist with the bandage, flinching from the sudden movement as he attempted to wrap it himself in his stubbornness. Internally giggling at the image popping into my head at his words, I accidentally released a snort, and four pairs of eyes turned to look at me.

“Unseelie Court, eh? Does that make him a politician?” I snapped my fingers, giggling to myself out loud, waiting for their response. When I didn’t receive one, I continued. “Short man syndrome, evil, an aspiration for blood. Yup, makes perfect sense.”

I couldn’t help myself. I burst out laughing, feeling the warm tears roll down my cheeks. I couldn’t stop myself.

"Okay, calm down, Chuckles. It wasn't that funny," snipped Kerry, rolling her eyes.

Cadeyrn’s eyebrows pinched, barring his teeth. “Do you think this is funny?”

"A little funny, yeah," I answered through the on-slot of tears and bouts of laughter that seemed to spew from my mouth without having the ability to stop.

Kerry scrunched up her face, looking at me with disdain. “I always knew she’d lose it one day.”

Marikit's worried gaze looked me over before she asked in a cautious voice, "Rayna, are you okay?"

The laughing continued until the point where pain shot through my side. I doubled over, holding my stomach, unable to stop the insane reflex I was experiencing.

"Am I okay? Am I okay... why wouldn't
