“I hear Micah might be leaving us,” Trinity said when I came down the stairs.

“Word travels fast.” I walked into the kitchen, from which marvelous smells were emanating, and lifted a lid to check things out. Gravy was bubbling in the pot and biscuits were browning in the oven. Mama D was making breakfast.

“Devon filled us in on her way out,” Trinity explained. “Said she’d been relieved of duty.”

“She isn’t staying to eat?”

“She was invited, but said she had to go. Wanted to get out before you changed your mind and made her babysit those two again.” Trinity picked up a spoon and stirred the gravy. “Have you changed your mind?”

“No. If Micah chooses to go, she can go.”

“She won’t survive in New Orleans. You know that.”

“Which is why she’ll never get out of Little Rock. If she opts to leave, I’ll have Rivers pick her up at the airport.”

“You’d set the FBI on her?”

“No, but I’ll set Rivers on her. He’s the official cleanup crew, so this falls in his bailiwick. Maybe he can scare some sense into her, but if not, he can detain her until we get a handle on things in New Orleans.”

“She may end up in prison.”

“She may, but better that than in the crosshairs of Matthew’s sniper rifle.”

“Oh.” Trinity set the gravy spoon down and replaced the lid. “I’d forgotten about Matthew.”

“She hasn’t. He’s the only one she’s afraid of now. I’m hoping that influences her decision.”

Mama D opened the oven to check the biscuits, sending a waft of delicious aroma cascading through the room. My stomach growled loudly in anticipation of sustenance. The biscuits couldn’t be done soon enough to suit me. I was starving. Literally starving.

“Speaking of influence,” Trinity said, turning toward me. “Sterling is having a hard time of it.”

“I know. Micah has thrown her off-kilter. She called me over here this morning to look at a guess. It might be an educated guess, but it’s a guess, just the same. She knows better.”

“I told her it wasn’t enough.”

“You already told her no?”

“Yes, I did, but she wasn’t in the mood to listen to me.”

“She’s in the mood now. I cut her off.”

“What?”

“I cut her off. Told her she wasn’t allowed to contact me directly anymore. That everything comes through you from now on. Which reminds me. I need you to show me how to block her on my phone. I told her I was doing that. That’s a thing, right? Blocking?”

She held out her hand, and I tossed her my phone. “You know she can hack into this phone anytime she chooses.”

“I know, but I still need to do it. Show her that I mean business. She can go around it if she wants, but that doesn’t mean I have to answer. Those days are gone.”

“Bet that went over big,” she said as she finished punching buttons on my phone and tossed it back to me.

“About how you’d think,” I admitted. “I tried to soften the blow by telling her about the new equipment coming and reminding her that her place is here with us.
