âI hear Micah might be leaving us,â Trinity said when I came down the stairs.
âWord travels fast.â I walked into the kitchen, from which marvelous smells were emanating, and lifted a lid to check things out. Gravy was bubbling in the pot and biscuits were browning in the oven. Mama D was making breakfast.
âDevon filled us in on her way out,â Trinity explained. âSaid sheâd been relieved of duty.â
âShe isnât staying to eat?â
âShe was invited, but said she had to go. Wanted to get out before you changed your mind and made her babysit those two again.â Trinity picked up a spoon and stirred the gravy. âHave you changed your mind?â
âNo. If Micah chooses to go, she can go.â
âShe wonât survive in New Orleans. You know that.â
âWhich is why sheâll never get out of Little Rock. If she opts to leave, Iâll have Rivers pick her up at the airport.â
âYouâd set the FBI on her?â
âNo, but Iâll set Rivers on her. Heâs the official cleanup crew, so this falls in his bailiwick. Maybe he can scare some sense into her, but if not, he can detain her until we get a handle on things in New Orleans.â
âShe may end up in prison.â
âShe may, but better that than in the crosshairs of Matthewâs sniper rifle.â
âOh.â Trinity set the gravy spoon down and replaced the lid. âIâd forgotten about Matthew.â
âShe hasnât. Heâs the only one sheâs afraid of now. Iâm hoping that influences her decision.â
Mama D opened the oven to check the biscuits, sending a waft of delicious aroma cascading through the room. My stomach growled loudly in anticipation of sustenance. The biscuits couldnât be done soon enough to suit me. I was starving. Literally starving.
âSpeaking of influence,â Trinity said, turning toward me. âSterling is having a hard time of it.â
âI know. Micah has thrown her off-kilter. She called me over here this morning to look at a guess. It might be an educated guess, but itâs a guess, just the same. She knows better.â
âI told her it wasnât enough.â
âYou already told her no?â
âYes, I did, but she wasnât in the mood to listen to me.â
âSheâs in the mood now. I cut her off.â
âWhat?â
âI cut her off. Told her she wasnât allowed to contact me directly anymore. That everything comes through you from now on. Which reminds me. I need you to show me how to block her on my phone. I told her I was doing that. Thatâs a thing, right? Blocking?â
She held out her hand, and I tossed her my phone. âYou know she can hack into this phone anytime she chooses.â
âI know, but I still need to do it. Show her that I mean business. She can go around it if she wants, but that doesnât mean I have to answer. Those days are gone.â
âBet that went over big,â she said as she finished punching buttons on my phone and tossed it back to me.
âAbout how youâd think,â I admitted. âI tried to soften the blow by telling her about the new equipment coming and reminding her that her place is here with us.
