CHAPTER 24

Reid must have misheard her. He was still reeling from the revelation that Winnie had lived in a Society compound.

One look at her face, though, told him he hadn’t misheard anything. Winnie had a sister. A sister who was still living within The Society. And that was the best-case scenario.

Winnie thought she had seen Belissa, but wasn’t sure. It could have been someone who resembled her sister. It had been five years, and Bliss would only have been fourteen. She would have changed a lot. Winnie was twenty-five, so her sister was now nineteen, past the ideal age to be sold.

The Society liked to sell their girls early. Georgia Donnelley was eighteen when her mother sold her to that dickhead Jarrod Jemison. It took her eight years of hell to make her way back to Darling.

He didn’t think the fact her sister might have already been sold had occurred to Winnie, and he wasn’t going to bring it up. Not unless he had to.

He texted his brothers and told them to head to the garage.

“I don’t expect you to get involved in all this, Daddy,” Winnie said. “That’s why I didn’t say anything. She is my sister, and I’m the one who abandoned her.”

That was not going to fly. She thought she knew all about having a Daddy from those romance novels she read. But there was so much more for them than those stories.

“I’m going to stop you right there, Tinkerbell. Let me ask you something. If you knew I was in trouble and there was something you could do to help, would you walk away and let me figure out how to handle it by myself?”

“Of course not, Daddy. But that’s not the same thing at all.”

“And how do you figure that?”

“I… well, I’m not sure, but I don’t want you hurt. They killed Billy! I’ve already caused enough problems for you. It’s what I do best.”

“One more comment like that, and we’ll have this conversation with your nose in the corner and your bottom bright red. Is that what you want?”

“No, Daddy.”

“Good. Babygirl, you know what Sabre does. If I put my life and the lives of my men in harm's way for strangers, I’m damn sure not going to sit by and watch while the woman I love struggles and is possibly harmed. Is that what the Daddies in those books do?”

“No, Daddy,” she repeated.

“This is where the puzzle pieces connect. When we work together, we create a whole picture. I can’t be who I need to be unless you are who you need to be. And the protective part of me needs you to lean on me when you have struggles. Can you do that for me?”

He knew if she saw it as doing something for him, it would be easier for her. Hopefully, in time, she would learn she could never be a burden to him.

“Yes, Daddy. I can do that.” She tried to smile but was interrupted by a huge yawn. Her face was still red and puffy.
