Chapter Fifteen

Leah had to hand it to Claudia Moffatt.

Although she hadn’t been around for the head shots, when the time came at the end of the evening to shoot a PR photo of Aiden Armstrong as Ebenezer Scrooge, Claudia Moffatt was right there, front and center.

The first few minutes were spent with Claudia fawning over Aiden. She went on and on about how she had followed his career for years. She exclaimed, again and again, what a big fan she was of his show, which she continually referred to as “Cannon,” and not its actual name, “Loose Cannon.”

That is, Leah thought, unless Claudia was mistaking Aiden for William Conrad, the over-sized star of the seventies TV detective show, “Cannon.” But that seemed unlikely.

Throughout the long and one-sided conversation, Aiden was kind and charming, nodding along as Claudia rattled on and on. He acted like he had all the time in the world, which Leah realized he probably did. The fact was, he appeared to be in no rush to get on with the photo shoot.

The same could not be said for Betsy, who was watching her precious schedule implode before her eyes. After waiting impatiently for their conversation to peter out on its own accord, she finally pushed forward and grabbed Aiden by the arm.

“Sorry to break up this lovefest,” she said. “But I’ve got a photographer, I’ve got a costume, and the clock is ticking.” She thrust the hanger full of clothes at Aiden.

“Try these on for size,” she said.

“And if they don’t fit?” he said with a grin. He appeared to be delighting in Betsy’s gung-ho demeanor. Leah assumed that, as the star of a TV show, it had been a while since anyone had ordered him around so vehemently.

“Don’t worry, it will fit enough for the photo,” Betsy snapped. “I have no shortage of safety pins.”

With that, she sent him down to the men’s room to climb into the musty costume.
