The terraced house they pulled up outside was in a rough area of Hyde which gave Hero an uncomfortable feeling. It went back to the days when he had to investigate the murder of a woman and her son who were mown down by one of the vilest gangs in Manchester.

“Are you all right?” Julie asked, as if she had picked up on the uncertainty emanating from him.

“Yep, just apprehension stirring. I’ll kick it into touch once we’re out of the car. Let’s get this over with.”

Julie joined him on the pavement and mumbled, “What’s the betting this proves to be a waste of time?”

“I’m getting the same feeling.”

He took a few paces and rang the grubby doorbell. He immediately wiped his hand down his trousers and then removed his warrant card from his pocket.

The door opened to reveal a woman with dyed blonde hair. She had a half-smoked cigarette hanging from her scarlet-coloured lips. Her legs were bare up to her mid-thigh, a black miniskirt covering the rest of them. A large amount of cleavage was on show and bulging out of her low-cut white top. Hero tried not to judge the woman from his first impression of her but found it exceedingly difficult.

“Mrs Newborn?”

She inched the door closed a little and sneered. “I used to be, who wants to know?”

He produced his ID and flipped it open in her face. “DI Nelson, and this is my partner, DS Shaw. We’d like a brief chat with you, if that’s all right?”

“It ain’t. I’m going out. Whatever the fucker has done, it’s nothing to do with me. Do you see a damned ring on me finger?”

“We’re aware that you and Colin got divorced a few months ago…”

Before he could say anything else, the woman slammed the bloody door in his face.

Hero seethed. How dare she? Bitch! “If that’s the way you want to play it,” he growled.

Julie took a step back as she knew exactly what was coming next.

Hero shoulder-charged the door, bounced off it the first time and the second. He put extra force behind his third attempt, and the door caved in.

“What the fuck? You can’t come barging in here like that. I’m going to report you, you bastard.”

“Do that. You’re under arrest.”

“For what?” the woman spluttered.

“For obstructing a police investigation. I said I wanted a word with you, and you refused to talk to me. Get your coat and your shoes, we’ll take this down the station.”

Newborn blustered. Puffed out a few breaths, words escaping her smart mouth for a second or two until what Hero had told her sank in. Then the tirade of cursing began.

He’d given her the option, but she’d neglected to put on either her coat or shoes, therefore, he frogmarched her to the car and opened the back door while Julie did what she could to secure the house. He spun Newborn around and placed the cuffs on her, not trusting her to sit quietly in the back without further trouble.

“You’ve got no right to do this.
