Chapter 5

Merchandise Foreign Trade in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus

Nadia Lisovskaya

Introduction

The chapter aims to identify commonalities and differences in merchandise foreign trade of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. Foreign trade is analysed from structural and institutional perspectives. Structural parameters of foreign trade refer to the volume and composition of imports and exports, their relation to domestic growth and development. The institutional aspect of foreign trade refers to the regulatory mechanism of foreign trade: tariffs, qualitative restrictions, export subsidies and other measures. The analysis covers the first ten years of transition, but this first needs to be contextualized.
