Wake Up Call

~SIX WEEKS LATER~

"You are seniors and yet some of you STILL struggle casting a water spell? Unbelievable!"

My eyes continued to read the open book in one hand while I twirled my wand in the other, doing my best to zone out Ms. Landsford's current two-hour lecture.

Since the official school starting date for freshmen, eight weeks had flown by.

It still felt like six weeks for me since we'd become professor apprentices and started doing our own investigation, training, and classes.

It was a tricky balance, but it was easier with everyone working together to split up the work.

The class assignments weren't hard at all; they were almost TOO easy for us.

This current lecture was just another example of another easy task that most of the seniors should have been able to do with their eyes closed, and yet here we were.

Alice was sitting on my shoulder, napping away in her owl form. Logan was sitting in the back corner seat, head resting on his crossed arms as he stared out the window.

At least I had my book to read or I would have fallen asleep by now. I'd stayed up all night researching about the past victims and injured individuals that had been attacked around Brighten and if they had any relations to one another.

This book would help me keep my image in one form, kind of like an illusion during movement, which would be helpful if I wanted to switch from Jewel to Jinn or vice versa while running.

It would be a little tricky to do stronger skills while having the spell activated, but it wasn't something I couldn't manage, and that was why I was spending a bit of extra time on the section before moving onto the next one where it showed you how to create a strong enough barrier that absorbs impact and shoots it outwards while protecting you.

Since this lecture was still going on, I wondered if I'd get to move onto that subject or read it later. A yawn escaped me, and I blinked my eyes.

Man, I really wish I could nap.

"Hmm...still not done," Alice mumbled.

I looked at her as she fluffed up her feathers and snuggled closer to me. I reached out and stroked her head.

Nope. Not yet.

"Ms. Landsford. I think we understand now. Can't we get another lesson or something?"

I had to roll my eyes at one of the rather cocky senior students. From the first day of class, Robert whatever his last name, was a real pain in the ass.

I hadn't really taken Emily seriously when she talked about half the students this year being douchebags, but boy, was I proven wrong.

It was such a weird shift from first year to now, where a good 70% of the seniors thought they were the shit when they still couldn't do basic spells that first years could.

It made sense why the decline of students qualifying for Mage Warrior title had been catastrophically dropping year by year.

There was no way Meredith or anyone in charge of their sectioned Mage Warrior bases would take any of these boys in.
