8.35 a.m.

Jones was in Newton Heights, eyeing the Range Rover Evoque sitting on the drive next to a BMW 4-series convertible with cream upholstery. He adjusted his face as the front door was yanked open, a tall, well-built male in a formal suit giving him an irritable look, a female voice coming from somewhere inside the big house.

‘I’ve got the kids’ lunchboxes!’ He eye-rolled, and said to Jones, ‘I’m gone in five minutes. Make it quick.’

Jones held up ID. ‘Sir, we’re in the neighbourhood making inquiries—’

‘If it’s about some old man who’s gone missing, I’ll save you the trouble. I never knew him. We don’t know anybody here.’

Seeing the door starting to close, Jones raised his hand to it. ‘Like I said, sir, we’re making inquiries. In the last few days, do you or any other adult living here recall seeing anybody walking along the Rednal Road? It runs past the turn-in to Newton—’

‘She wouldn’t have noticed anything and neither have I. We never take that road. Our route is always in the direction of the city.’ He lifted his hand, displaying his left wrist.

Jones’ eyes settled on a large watch with multiple dials.

‘Have you got the slightest clue how much you’re costing me, hanging about here?’

Jones smiled, lightly tapping the rolled-up list against his own forehead in quasi-salute. ‘Thank you, sir. I appreciate your time.’

Walking away from the house, muttering, ‘Wanker’, he spotted Toby Reynolds some way ahead and picked up speed. ‘Got anything, Tobes?’

Reynolds waited for him, keeping his voice low. ‘Zero. What is it with this lot? They live here but that’s about it. Their heads, eyes, interest, everything is miles away. Not a single one so far has even asked me a question.’

Jones elaborately raised his arm and frowned at his Casio watch. ‘You’ve just cost me … about fifty pence.’

Reynolds grinned at him. ‘What’re you on about?’

‘It’s what some big I-Am just said to me. How many more have we got?’

Reynolds consulted his list. ‘Nineteen, no, twenty. I can’t stand this whole place and everybody in it. Let’s just crack on, get it done.’
