Chapter Seventeen

It was down to the wire. Only a few days till Christmas meant Bryan was going out of town soon, and she’d miss her chance to talk with him. After a handful of calls and unanswered texts, Kassandra figured it was a lost cause. She hadn’t seen anything on Vera’s social media pages that would indicate something bad happening to Bryan—and she kept track of everything on there.

Feeling a bit helpless and needing a bit of air, Kassandra decided to go for a jog. By now, her leg was brand new, with only a bit of scarring left, fading a bit, from the earlier attacks. Not to mention, for once this week it wasn’t snowing or icy on the sidewalks in town, so it was a great time to get out to clear her head.

The notifications on her watch beeped. She’d reached the mile goal. Right outside of Octavia’s, she used a lamppost for balance to stretch, a burning, but relieving reprieve. The cool air burned her lungs as she breathed in, her heart rate thumping as it relaxed from its peak.

After a quick chat with Cara Beth and grabbing an iced matcha tea despite the lowering temperatures, she made her way back through the main streets of town, in the direction of her condo complex. There was little to think about now, fully embracing the freedom of letting everything go while she was out on her peaceful jog. The endorphins were going, the music blaring in her earbuds, her tea halfway gone on her brisk walk home.

Finally back onto Main street, Kassandra crashed into another person.

“Shit!” she cursed, the tea nearly squished in her hand. The lid to the container had popped off, and Kassandra hoped none of its contents spilled onto them.

As they stepped back and righted themselves, composing quickly, she heard him say: “Kass?”

Kassandra tensed when she looked up. “Bryan?”

They held each other’s gaze, stunned at the sight of one another. It was the first time she’d seen him since the incident. Though relieved he’d survived the ordeal, Kassandra examined him. She expected Bryan to look a little worn, showcasing cuts or bruises, or any sign from his tussle. Instead, he looked fine.

“Hey,” she said timidly.

She couldn’t say anything about her own wellbeing either, since her wounds had healed rapidly thanks to Serena’s ability to patch her up so quickly. With or without the Covenant blood, she still should’ve had stitches at the very least.

Bryan’s mouth moved slightly like he was going to say something, his hands shoved into his leather jacket.

Kassandra decided to toss the rest of the tea into the nearby bin. “About the other day, I…”

“Don’t worry about—”

They said at the same time.

Was he going to say ‘Don’t worry about it?’

She raised her eyebrows. How was that even a possibility?

“Mind if we find somewhere quiet to, uh…” Bryan trailed off. He gestured to the park across the street, right in the town square. The gazebo was lit up at this time of night
