Leningrad, 1930s. A daughter of a Russian family of professors, which is torn apart by Stalinism and World War II, renews a friendship with a woman from school, who now works in a museum. The friend is aggressive in pointing out the foibles of the men in the family, and she makes herself the butt of jokes. In the family’s emptied townhouse, the two care for each other through the German siege of the city.

In northern Russia, a grandmother, who has raised her daughter’s children while the parents worked for an airline, is shunned by her son-in-law when the daughter dies. Her niece arrives from Moscow to try to find someone else in the family to take the grandmother in, but like her, they all have other obligations. Finally, she succeeds with the most humble relatives, who have survived a stay in Chechnya at the cost of a damaged daughter and who are joyful to see the kindly old woman.
