“Whew, okay, I’m tired. Who knew shopping for a six-year old would be so much work.” Ethan plopped down in the restaurant booth they had been shown to. After three hours of shopping, he was plum tuckered out, as his mom would say.

“Yeah, this one can go for hours. He says he hates it, but he’s very picky about his clothing for one so young. It’s always an adventure when we go clothes shopping.”

They picked a restaurant that had a kid’s area for Damian and as he scurried off, they each ordered a soda and some breadsticks.

Sitting here with Ethan felt so right to Vanessa and she wanted to explore this a bit more, “So, what was the real reason you were at the mall today?”

“Well, my mother’s birthday is coming up soon and I needed to buy her a gift.”

“Oh, so it had nothing to do with the fact that we were going to be here today?” Yes, she was putting him on the spot, but she had to know if he was serious. What were his true intentions? For her, this was not a game, nor would it ever be.

“Listen Vanessa, you know I like you. Probably more than I should after such a short time. But I want to be honest with you. I’ve spent numerous days and nights thinking of you and wanting you since the first moment I noticed you. There’s a reason why you keep holding back and I respect that, but know that I will keep pursuing you.”

Ethan reached across the table and grabbed both of her hands in his. “When I first saw you, you captured me. I know there’s something here between us, I just need you to give us a chance. We could be good together. I know it. I feel it. You know that I will be good to you and Damian and I would never try and take Thomas’ place.”

Looking at the man across the table from her, she knew he was sincere and that he meant every word. During their late night talks, she had shared her thoughts and feelings around her husband’s death, the pain she felt, and the toll it had taken on her and Damian to get to a better place. One late night call earlier this week, they talked about her concern with dating another man who placed his life at risk on a regular basis.

“I’m not sure if I’m ready for this Ethan.”

“You just have to give us a chance. If it weren’t for my job, would you have these reservations about us?”

Sighing into the phone, she knew what her answer would be, “No. But honestly, you have no idea what you’re asking of me.”

“How about this. We’ll take it as slow as you need to, but know this. I will do everything in my power to you see that we would be good together.”

“Ethan, I’m trying. You make me feel things I never thought I could. Not again. Just give me time, okay?”

“Yes, time is yours, but I’m going to be here.
