CHAPTER 24 – MODERN PROBLEMS

After a deep sigh of relief at Shaheen’s exit, I posed the burning question of the day.

“Rama, Hanuman, Mom, Grandpa! Can any of you finally tell me what’s really going on here?”

Awkward silence ensued as each culprit looked to the next for confirmation of who should begin.

With a deep breath, Rama took the stage. “The note is from Ravana. He is toying with us. He knows about you, Supriya, and he knows where we are. The driver of the car today was his sister, Surpanakha, who you have unfortunately met twice now.

“She and I have a long adversarial history that makes her extremely dangerous to all of you. We have entered a game of cat and mouse, and right now Ravana has the upper hand. He wants us to know it. We must leave this place at once.”

“But wait,” I pushed, revving my logical engines. “How did they know that I would be at the pier today? Did they intercept Grandpa’s text? We need to know how we’ve been compromised before we make a move.”

“I didn’t send you a text, Supriya,” my grandfather chimed in. “You sent me a text.”

“Well, I guess that explains it,” Hanuman joined. “They sent false texts. That means that they know your phone numbers and other identifying elements of your phones…” A realization dawned on him. “You must turn your phones off immediately! They might be tapping into our geo-location right now if they haven’t already!”

I scrambled to pull my phone from my blood-soaked pocket. Cracked. The whole screen cracked, like my ribs had been before Rama healed me…

“Mine’s been off since the accident,” I announced.

My grandfather ripped off the back of his phone roughly, removing his battery and SIM card. “That should do it, right?” He looked to the group for confirmation.

“They may have already traced us,” my mother whispered.

“We must leave here immediately,” Rama reiterated. My mother shot him a grateful look, but I needed something else settled before we left our current sanctuary. Shaheen’s words echoed in my mind: I saw you on the news…

I grabbed the TV remote and flipped it on.

“Terrorism suspects wanted…” Hanuman’s Giovanni image with the burning SUV behind him flashed across the screen.

“Hit-and-run victim miraculously revived by mystery man…” An image of Rama carrying me in my blood-soaked coat flashed across the screen. I flipped the channel.

“Hit-and-run victim and rescuer believed to be kidnapped by terrorist…” I flipped the channel again.

“Confused onlookers insist that there was a woman in the runaway SUV, but no body was found…” A blond anchorwoman stood in front of the burned-out brewery and SUV carcass at the Embarcadero. Flip.

“Modern-day miracle man or new medical breakthrough? Later tonight on KRON 4 News…”

Hanuman shook his head. “We’re going to have to be more careful. It took me years to perfect Giovanni’s form. Now I will have to go back to another human shape. But you’re all so tall these days—I can’t use an old one without standing out,” he complained.
