Chapter 34
Jayna rode inside her self-driving auto, the vehicle passing through the city streets. Minutes later, she left behind the populated areas and entered the surrounding hills. The deeper she went, the darker her environment became. The houses also grew increasingly sparse. Eventually, she reached an area where the homes were separated by enormous tracks of land. Her auto stopped by one of these isolated dwellings.
She disembarked, walked to the front door, and knocked. The door opened, revealing a young man in street clothes.
He stood there for a second. âI canât believe you actually showed.â
âI told you I would.â
âYeah. But I didnât believe you. I didnât even think you were actually Jayna Williams.â
She opened her hands. âHere I am.â The words were playful, but her expression remained serious.
âCome inside,â he responded, giving her room.
She stepped into the rundown home, and the man closed the door. She then followed him into the living room.
âYou want anything?â he asked over his shoulder. âDrinks, food, sensory enhancers?â
âJust your name. â
âNot yet.â
He rejoined a group of people who sat on couches. Like the man, everyone was in their early twenties and wore street clothes. A coffee table sat before them, one with pistols and assault rifles scattered across. She stopped five feet away.
âSo,â said a man, holding a weapon part and a cleaning rag, âwhat do you want?â
âLike I told your friend, I want to join.â
âWhy?â the man followed, clearly the leader.
âWhy do you think?â
He resumed cleaning the weapon part. âTons of people have friends or family members that were killed by the Martians. That doesnât automatically make them right for our group. They have to possess combat knowledge and a willingness to fight.â
âYou think I donât?â
He stopped cleaning and looked up. âI think you have adequate motivation. But youâre young and innocent, not to mention rich. That doesnât make for a stellar combatant.â
âHave you ever been to Mars?â
âNone of us have.â He gestured at the weapons. âBut what do you think weâre getting ready for?â
âSo you havenât seen a shot fired?â
âHave you?â
She slowly nodded. âIâve been thereâto the enemy planet. Iâve been inside its labyrinthine cities and Iâve seen its inhabitants.â She let a moment pass. âIâve also come across Red Faction.â
âBullshit,â said a female.
Jayna looked to her. âI even fought them. And in case youâre wondering who came out on top, here I am.â
âSorry,â said the leader, âbut I find that hard to believe. â
Jayna gestured towards a holo-screen on the table. âCan I use that?â
âGo ahead.â
She grabbed the screen and connected through her net contacts. She wore the same contacts on Mars, by which she recorded everything that happened. She transferred the recording into the screen, pressed play, and handed the screen to the leader. The group members huddled around him.
âWhat city is this?â he asked.
âDaedalia.â
Everyone looked up. They turned back when the screen showed her running. Not long after, they parted their mouths when she pulled a submachinegun and sprayed two Martians with awful gouts of fire. Everyone looked up once more.
