Chapter Five.

Nolan

“Get moving,” one of the men bit out as he dragged me along.

I stumbled over my own feet and he righted me, muttering curse words under his breath. My hands were tied behind my back, a thick binding of some sort holding them together. I gave them a little wiggle, flexing my fingers against the tight binding until I managed to get a little room.

I was blindfolded and being pulled across some sort of gravel terrain. The crunch of it underfoot made it difficult to ascertain exactly what was surrounding me, but it helped figuring out how many men were close by—their booted feet making significant steps over the rough ground.

There were three men surrounding me, and not a single one of them worried me, despite the situation being tense. They were likely armed to the teeth and would have no problem using their weapon on me or any other unlikely person that stumbled across their path, but my guess was going to be that those three couldn’t aim for shit, and they had no damned clue who I was and what I could do.

One of them was particularly tall, but he was all sinew and no muscle and there was no doubt in my mind that I could snap him like a twig if need be—though my bet was he was a runner and not a fighter. One threat and he’d piss himself and run for cover. The other two were a different problem. Both short and stocky, they walked with confident struts that showed they didn’t give a shit about anything or anyone. I bet that cockiness had served them well in their old life, but in this life, in this new world, cockiness was the thing that was going to get them killed.

I was still wearing my blindfold, but it didn’t matter. Even without seeing I knew how many of them there were. I could feel the air around me moving. Could feel the shadows falling over me from the tall one and hear the heavy steps of the other two.

This was what I’d been trained to do, many years ago.

Felt like a goddamned lifetime ago now.

A firm hand was holding on to my forearm and it pulled me up short, forcing me to stop moving. I tuned out my immediate surroundings and listened for what else I could hear around me, frowning as the thick silence was broken up by the low groan of zombies, their deathly, hungry moans echoing out from somewhere. It didn’t bode well.

“Smiley, got a new guy for you.” The tall guy to my left spoke, his accent not local to Las Vegas but not strong enough for me to ascertain exactly where he was from.

“Thank God, because these bastards aren’t going to last much longer and Charlie said he wants a big show put on for some guests he has coming in.”

One of the shorter men snorted on a laugh. “That’s if they make it in. Roads are getting real bad out there again.
