That night, after dinner, Sean and Lucinda got out the board games again while Cazbek went down to his office.

And did nothing at all.

He just sat there, his sensitive dragon hearing picking up every word they said, every bit of friendly trash talk, every time Lucinda laughed, or crowed with delight over a victory.

How could he get involved with her, knowing he would probably lose her?

How could he not?

After an hour he couldn’t stand it anymore. She was right there, and he was losing her already. He got up and went back to the dining room, just as they were finishing a game. Grabbing a beer from the fridge, he sat down at the table.

“What are we playing?” he asked. “Monopoly? I love Monopoly. I’ll be banker.”

Immediately Lucinda smiled, her whole face lighting up. She was wearing one of the new outfits, and she looked especially beautiful. Just looking at her gave him a warm feeling in his chest.

Sean said, “You will not. I’ll be banker.” To Lucinda he added, “Caz isn’t allowed to be banker. He hoards all the money and makes up bogus rules about why we can’t have our two hundred dollars when we pass ‘Go.’”

“Universal basic income breeds sloth and laziness in the lower classes,” Cazbek said. “You need to work for your money.”

“Says the man in the penthouse who has more money than he knows what to do with,” Lucinda said. “Give the bank to Sean, evil capitalist.”

Cazbek said to her, “If you vote with me and let me be banker, I’ll raise your ‘Go’ money to three hundred.”

“This is what happens when the one percent takes over,” Sean said. “They use selective allocation of resources to promote financial inequity, and ultimately benefit themselves. Give me that bank.”

He took the cardboard money tray and put it out of Cazbek’s reach. “And no, if you buy multiple hotels at a time you don’t get an extra discount.”

“Fine then,” Cazbek huffed. “But I get to be the race car.”
