Driving back to Brooklyn, I thought of just one thing: where Hiromi and I should run. Hiromi wanted to draw a line in the sand and not run. That seemed to be the right thing at the time. I beefed up the protection on the house and showed Hiromi where the guns were. But, that was before Roberta and Wolfemeyer were murdered. I learned in Eastern Europe that it was wiser to retreat when facing a shoot-out. Then come back later and kill the bastards.

I didn’t want any part of a shoot-out with the Ice Queen and her goons. She seemed to be in full panic mode right now. I didn’t like dealing with people like that. You know, desperate people do desperate things.

Running wasn’t heroic, but it seemed like the best option. Running wouldn’t replace revenge; it would just postpone it for a while. There was resolve in my mind: the Ice Queen would die by my hand. It would just have to wait until she wouldn’t expect it.

Predicting where she would send her killers to strike next would be pretty easy—my house. Hiromi and I would likely be the next targets. Had Richard Wolfemeyer reported that I was talking to Dominic Gonnella, the candy store man? I made a mental note to warn Dominic. He would laugh, but knowing Dominic, he would have some of his boys like Ralphie keeping an eye out.

I found a parking spot right in front of my house. On the drive back from Manhattan, I was thinking of California. We could catch a flight first thing tomorrow morning. I had thought about Florida, but it was too hot this time of the year. I had thought about Chicago—it was more like New York, and it had two major league baseball teams. It would be fun to go to Wrigley Field and watch the Dodgers play the Cubs. But, the Dodgers had played there last weekend. This weekend the Dodgers were on the road playing the Philadelphia Phillies. These were going to be huge games. With the Dodgers just one game ahead of the Giants, we’d have to win both games against the Phillies. In the end, I thought California was about as far away from the Ice Queen as we could get; I could get the scores out there somewhere.

There were no major league baseball teams in California, but they did have some Triple-A minor league baseball teams that were pretty good. Joe DiMaggio had got his start playing for the San Francisco Seals. In San Francisco, Hiromi could visit her parents. I didn’t think it would be appropriate for me to accompany Hiromi to visit her parents, but I could rent a car, drop her off for a few days and just immerse myself in San Francisco Seals baseball. Maybe I would head down to LA where the Hollywood Stars played. Wrigley Field in Los Angeles was a homer haven, so it might be fun to hang out there. Maybe I’d even take the boat over to Catalina Island.
