It was simple, really.

Since the ward on the jail cells used Fae magic, all we needed was enough diamond to break through. The problem was finding it.

That’s where Ava and Pestilence came in.

“Damon has a ceremonial diamond-bladed dagger he keeps in his spell room,” the woman said to the fairies. “The hilt is made of rope and bone. As long as you only touch the handle, you should be safe.” She paused as if debating whether to say more, wringing her hands nervously. “If it’s true there are berserkers upstairs, you should hurry. If Damon finds out they’re here, he’ll burn this place to the ground with all of us in it.”

Ava and Pestilence trained worried eyes on me. I had no way of knowing if the Fae woman was telling the truth about the depth of Damon’s hatred for the berserkers, but either way, I wanted to get the hell out of this cell as soon as possible. The fairies had already been to the spell room and returned unscathed. I was reasonably confident they could make another trip there safely.

I stared hard at Ava. “Promise me you’ll be careful and not touch the blade?”

She gave me a solemn nod.

Pestilence flew in front of her. “You wouldn’t happen to have a snack, would you, Ray? We’ve done an awful lot of flying, and I’m starving.”

Ava smacked his arm in reproach, and he rubbed the spot while glaring at her.

Guilt sawed at me. They’d been burning precious calories in search of the whip, and now they would use even more to rescue us from a situation I should’ve been smart enough to keep myself out of. “I’m sorry, guys. All my food was in the backpack the drekavats took. I promise to feed you just as soon as we have the whip and get back to my realm.”

Pestilence pointed his finger at me, more serious than I’d ever seen him. “I expect fried chicken.”

My eyebrows rose, and I gave a mock salute that appeared to satisfy the fairy.

As they disappeared in a burst of sparkling dust, I questioned the soundness of my promise. The diminutive Fae didn’t mess around when it came to eating, and they were already getting cranky. What happened if I failed to feed them soon? A small shudder rippled through me.

I didn’t really want to find out.

“Do you plan to kill him?”

The woman’s voice pulled me from my thoughts of vicious, hangry fairies. She peered at me intently from across the hall, as if my answer was very important to her.

“Lafitte?”

She nodded.

“Maybe.” I shrugged. “If there isn’t any other way.”

If the downturn of her lips was anything to go by, she’d clearly hoped for a different answer. Truthfully, without reading the file, I didn’t know what our orders were regarding the dark warlock.

“I hate him, and he needs to die.” The vehemence in her words sliced at me.

Peep let out another groan, and my eyes cut to his cell. When he brought a hand to his face, poking at it gingerly, a massive weight lifted off my shoulders.
