Chapter Eighteen

The ambulance roared off with Ashley in the back and Derek beside her. Michael chose to stay behind and call in the crime scene investigators to do as Ashley had asked, but called his family waiting at the hospital to tell them the latest developments first. He had been calling about every ten minutes throughout the excavation to let them know the progress of getting Ashley removed from the mangled mess of twisted metal. He had kept his information strictly about how the firemen were doing, not telling any of them how he had gotten a chance to peek into the interior of the ambulance and witness his sister covered in blood, unconscious. That was a detail that did not need to be shared with his worried family.

He still felt sick to his stomach when he thought of how she had looked, her hair matted to her head and her face pale and pasty looking. He had noticed that her breathing was shallow and she was struggling to catch her breath when they had finally pulled her free. He figured there was a good chance that she had some broken ribs and maybe a punctured lung, and he prayed there was nothing more seriously wrong. He had been on enough accident calls to realize that many people had internal injuries that were life threatening, and to think his sister was in that position right now scared the hell out of him. He really wanted to be there with her and the family, but knew it was just as important to try and catch the guy who was doing this. Besides, Ashley had plenty of people there to help her through this and they would keep him informed of any developments. Four patrol cars had escorted the ambulance as it made its way to the hospital, assuring Michael that there would be no more accidents.

“Michael, why did you let that piece of shit ride with your sister instead of you going with her?”

Chuckling under his breath, Michael turned to Nick. “I needed to stay here and take over the crime scene and I felt better knowing someone was with her, in case someone tries to kill her again.”

“What the hell do you mean, kill her?” Nick shouted at Michael, and then moved closer to him when he realized people had stopped to stare at the two of them.

“I have a feeling this was no random accident. I called in the plates on the four-by-four while we were waiting for you to get her out, and they came back stolen. I think someone deliberately ran into her. She confirmed my suspicion when she told me to dust the ambulance.”

Arching his left eyebrow, Nick said, “That’s why she asked us all to not leave any fingerprints on it? But who would do something like that, knowing that she was already injured inside and with innocent victims with her?”

Rubbing the back of his neck with his good arm, Michael growled, “Some really sick fuck, if you ask me.
