Chapter 9

STEWARDS, NOT SAVIORS

When we raise our eyes to heaven, something strange happens to us. Fears of our circumstances, including life, vocations, and the condition of the environment, are so moderated that we are able to engage in stewardship with hopeful responsibility instead of utopianism or despair. Our fears really can be relieved by the one fear that matters most. We no longer feel that a secure job or a secure planet rests in our hands.

The kingship of Yahweh is exactly what we need in order to put the rulers of this age in their place. Again and again in the prophetical books, God indicts priests, prophets, and kings for imagining that God is a pet they can put on a leash and manipulate. We see this clearly in Psalm 2. It is in some ways a strange song, but as we look more closely at it we clearly see how God turns the tables on his rebels. Instead of the rulers not taking God seriously, it is he who does not take them seriously at all. In fact, he laughs at them:

Why do the nations rage

and the peoples plot in vain?

The kings of the earth set themselves,

and the rulers take counsel together,

against the LORD and against his Anointed, saying,

“Let us burst their bonds apart

and cast away their cords from us.”
