It's not that they were that aware of the codes in play in the barely altered press releases that were being reproduced in their ‘news’ sections. What was confirmed was how they too saw things through the eyes of the CEOs and big investors they talked to.8 According to a senior FT reporter: ‘For us it's the people who are running companies and investing in them that we write for. The company managers and the fund managers … There aren't any private investors.’ Richard Northedge, Deputy Editor of Sunday Business, explained:

On Sunday Business, we write for people who are in business. Certainly, we write for the captains of industry … The bread and butter stuff though is about business for business – take-overs, new directors and other changes. People are interested in reading because they work in the company or have invested in it.
