Chapter Nineteen

Friday…

Ericka didn’t sleep well. Thoughts of being on stage in front of thousands of people had her stomach so upset she couldn’t sit or lay still.

After breakfast Ericka was supposed to be taken to the venue. The roadies would have the stage set. She’d do sound checks and she assumed other things, but she wasn’t exactly sure what.

She’d read her Bible and prayed for strength and less fear. She’d reviewed the lyrics to the songs. She’d sung them under her breath multiple times to get the tune. Currently, she was in as good a shape as one week of prep work could create.

“You ready?”

She hadn’t heard the knock. She wished she hadn’t heard Maggie’s voice. Then she might have been able to deny that any of this was really happening.

“It’s time to roll according to the schedule.”

Ericka opened the door. “Any word on Rosetta?”

“None. It’s like she disappeared from the face of the earth.”

“Where could she be? I know she went to that bus the day of the explosion. Why can’t they find anything on her?”

“I’m sorry, Ericka. I don’t know. My understanding is that Echo Team has been looking into the explosion. They found a device in the luggage area. Since no one expected Rosetta to be there we think it was another scare tactic that went bad.”

Ericka sighed.

That meant she was definitely on the stage tonight and maybe other nights too.

Maggie walked toward the living area. “Don’t worry. We’ll find her while you’re practicing or on stage. It’ll be okay.”

Ericka appreciated the support despite the fact she didn’t think the idea was realistic.

“There you are.” Greg had a large smile.

She smiled remembering the night before. He had some moves. And he was funnier than she’d expected.

“I’m here.”

Greg handed her a bottle of water and a bowl of cantaloupe. “Your prescribed breakfast.”

“Thank you.”

She opened the bottle of water and sipped the cold liquid. “What time do we leave?”

“Fifteen minutes.” Quinn entered. “All your outfits are there so you just need to go in comfy clothes.”

She nodded. After an intake of breath, she said, “Before we go, I want to say thank you to you all. I couldn’t complete this mission without you guys.”

Maggie nodded.

Quinn shook her hand.

Greg smiled, again.

“Give me twenty minutes.” Ericka ran back to get a shower. In the bathroom, she seriously considered hiding out. Sure, they would know where she was but none of them would dare to come and get her out.

After her muscles relaxed from the hot water, and she’d cleaned, she forced herself to get out of the water and dress. Clothed in a tracksuit, she headed back to the living area. They were all sitting on the couch and waiting. Time to leave and literally face the music.

Ilsa looked around as the car delivered her downtown. Don had been distraught over not finding Rosetta. He would have gone on national television and sought help to find her but then he would have thrown the police officer under the bus.

The irony of the phrasing wasn’t lost on her.
