Chapter Six

Evan woke up with a predictably pounding head and a case of dry mouth so severe if he hadn’t known better, he’d have thought he’d downed a whole barrel full of beer, not just half a glass. What the hell did they make their beer from in this place?

“Here.” Lee helped him sit upright enough that he could drink, then tilted a glass to his lips. It was just water, but it tasted better than anything else could have right then. Evan groaned—a little pitifully, he had to confess—when Lee took it away a moment later.

“I’m saving some for you to drink after you take the hangover cure,” Lee told him. “You’ll thank me, I promise.” He held a new, smaller glass up to Evan’s face. It smelled …

“What’s in this?”

“Nothing toxic.”

“What?”

“Corn flour, lemon, salt, and, I believe, a raw egg,” Lee said. Evan looked at him in horror. “I’m told it really does help, but of course the decision is up to you.”

Evan thought for a second about sitting up under his own power. Then he sighed and nodded his head—very slightly—toward the glass. “I’ll take it.” One quick swallow and a few seconds controlling his gag reflex later, and he managed to drink the rest of the water. “Ugh.”

“Give it a bit to settle before you try to get up,” Lee advised. Evan blinked his eyes and looked at his lover more closely. He was already fully dressed, wearing a long dark coat over a silver-gray suit. His hair was left down but meticulously brushed, and he was even wearing a pair of what looked like leather gloves.

“How do you conjure up such beautiful things?” Evan asked, fingering the edge of Lee’s coat.

“I wish I knew. It’s one of the stranger side effects of my … magic, I suppose.” Evan knew that Lee didn’t care to talk about the odder aspects of his existence. The fact that he was a man who could become a dragon, and a dragon who could shapeshift into a man, was challenging enough. To add his warrior form to that, all armored and armed, not to mention the silver jets of power he could fire when he took that form … it made him even more inexplicable, and Lee didn’t like that. He didn’t like reminders of the fact that he was something remarkable while Evan was just a man.

“Stop it, please.”

“Sorry,” Evan said, turning his thoughts back to how terrible he felt instead of their eventual, inevitable separation.

“Wallowing in your misery isn’t better.”

“I am never drinking again,” Evan vowed. “That stuff was awful.”

Lee frowned. “You do seem to be having a very severe reaction to it. I’ll let Vincent know, so he can tell the brewer. They might have made a bad batch.”

“Bad for me at least.” Evan leaned his head against Lee’s chest. “What time is it?”

“A bit past eight in the morning, I believe.”

“Shit.” He was going to be late to meet with Darryl. “I’m supposed to be downstairs by half past.
