The eight hunters assigned to Checkpoint Fourteen were now divided three ways as they stood guard: Akira, Mimata and his buddy, and Katsuyaâs team of five. Katsuya, Yumina, Airi, Reina, and Shiori were all working togetherâthe main reason why the men had marked the children as âfarm-raised.â The older pair was already prejudiced against young hunters, and they readily assumed that the one adult in a group of children was a babysitter minding her less-skilled charges. They were wrong about that, but they could be forgiven for their mistake, since Shiori was genuinely a cut above her companions.
Both Mimataâs and Katsuyaâs groups chatted to ease their boredom. Time passed uneventfully, and their tension dissipated. As long as they took basic precautions, like keeping an eye on their scanners, they werenât likely to suffer a surprise attack.
So far, this job really was so easy a child could do it.
Akira passed the time studying and talking with Alpha. Growing up in the slums had left him with poor literacy and worse education. Without that foundational knowledge to build on, he couldnât learn what a successful hunter needed to know. So he spent his free moments trying to plug the many gaps in his education.
Suddenly, Alpha glanced to one side. Akira turned and saw Katsuya and Reina splitting off from their group and heading toward him. Reina marched straight up to him with Katsuya and Shiori in tow.
âWhatâs your name?â she asked sharply, looking down at him where he sat.
âAkira,â he replied.
âWhy are you off on your own? Come join us.â
âNo thanks. Iâm good where I am.â
Reina furrowed her brows. âWhy? Do you think you can get away with slacking off if you stay here alone?â
âIâm not slacking off, and I donât plan to.â
âStop lying. Youâve just been sitting there quietly this whole time.â
Katsuyaâs and Mimataâs groups had been standing guard in shifts. Akira hadnât even been doing that bare minimumâat least as far as anyone else could see. From that perspective, Reinaâs reproach seemed justified. But Akira remained unruffled.
âIâve been using my scanner to scout a wide area,â he said. âI noticed as soon as you started to head over here, didnât I?â
Strictly speaking, it was Alpha who had been doing all the scouting. At his words, she gave him a smirk, although he pretended not to notice.
Reina looked more annoyed than ever. But she couldnât argue with Akiraâs logic, so she tried a different tack. He would obey her.
âWhatâs your hunter rank?â she demanded.
âTwenty.â
âMineâs twenty-three!â Reina announced, a little smugly.
A brief silence followed. Akira didnât respond, and his attitude remained exactly as beforeânot at all the reaction Reina had expected. She started looking annoyed again.
âHey, are you listening?!â she snapped. âMy hunter rank is twenty-three! Higher than yours!â
âSo?â asked Akira.
âWhat do you mean, âsoâ?! I outrank you, so do as I say! Stand up and come join us!â
âNo. No one told me to shut up and obey any hunter with a higher rank, and itâs not in my contract either. Iâve got no obligation to listen to you.
