CHAPTER 16

“Something’s Wrong!”

Camille

“What do you think, Lady Camille?” a goblin was asking me. I blinked, snapping out of my daze.

“Sorry, about what?”

“The communal dining area,” he huffed with an impatient sigh, tapping the plans etched into a large sheet of parchment in front of him. “Should we divide it into herbivore and carnivore sections, or just let everyone mingle?”

I blinked, staring at the plan. Try as I might, I just couldn’t bring myself to focus on it. Seeming to sense my disinterest, Boranos chimed in.

“I think this is the sort of thing we can determine on our own, Muga,” he reasoned. “We cannot continue relying on Lady Camille to organize every single aspect of our lives.”

“That’s right,” I agreed, forcing a smile. “As much as I’d like to help, I’ll need to be moving on soon. You’ll have to be able to handle things without me around.”

Muga’s eyes grew wide, and his chin puckered with a sad frown.

“You are leaving us, Lady Camille?”

“Well, yes.” I struggled to keep my voice level, but I was pretty sure I heard it crack with my next words. “I’m not much of a traveling apothecary if I stay in one place all of the time. There are monsters all over the Darkwood who need a healer, and I need to go to them.”

A somber mood settled over the council room, and I turned to look out the window to hide the emotion in my eyes. It was sad enough to think I was just leaving to go do witch stuff elsewhere. Imagine if I confessed to them that I expected to die soon?

As I composed myself, movement in the direction of my cottage caught my attention. As I watched, Zynder rose high into the air and banked, heading west over the forest with a determined beat to his wings, as though he were in a hurry.

“That’s odd,” I mused aloud as I stared out the window. “I wonder where he’s going?”

“Who?” Boranos asked.

“Zynder. I just saw him fly away towards the lowlands.”

“Thank goodness for that!” Muga chortled. “That dragon is always hovering around you. It makes me nervous.”

The goblin was right. Zynder was always hanging around me. No matter where I was or what I was doing, I knew he wasn’t far. He might occasionally slip off for a private moment here and there, but that was only after he got himself worked up from touching and kissing me, which he certainly hadn’t been doing this time.

If he was leaving my side now…

Something’s wrong.

“I have to go,” I informed the council, grabbing my broom and dashing out into the cold sunlight. A few cries of protest followed me, but I ignored them, rushing back to my cottage and throwing open the door to my study.

There, sticking out slightly further than it ought to be, was the book that hid my story notes. Pulling it out and examining the parchment within, I found the pages creased and punctured with tell-tale claw marks.

“Ah, fuck.”

He knew. He knew everything.
