Chapter Nine

Ari

We rode with Ted and Rhonda for hours, long into the night. They traded off, one resting in the passenger seat while the other drove. I figured one of them would normally take the bunk and sleep, but with the three of us around, they were more liable to want to stay conscious and cautious.

Not that I felt like much of a threat. I doubted any of my magic had survived what the judges had done to me, and Jace’s was almost certainly still gone after his adjustment. But then, if anything went wrong, Noah would probably destroy everything in the cabin and the entire truck besides. So there was that.

Maybe they were right to be cautious.

I pushed the thought away. We had just as much reason to be paranoid. But meanwhile, I ached from the day, a throbbing exhaustion that only became worse as time crept on. Leaning against the wall on the opposite side of Jace, Noah didn’t seem like he felt much better. Sitting between us with his elbows braced on his knees, Jace had been keeping up the flow of conversation for hours, following along as best he could with topics ranging from sports to food to whatever questions Rhonda or Ted asked. But even he was starting to look drained from it all.

And what we’d do once we reached Toledo was anybody’s guess.

I grimaced, leaning back against the pillow.

“You okay?” Noah asked quietly.

I looked over to him. His brow twitched up.

“Yeah.”

He nodded, his gaze returning to the wall of the storage compartment beside the bunk and whatever it was he saw there. It didn’t really seem like he was watching it.

“You?” I whispered.

A heartbeat passed. “Yeah.”

It felt like he was lying. His green eyes were dark, more so than they should have been even in the dim golden glow of the bunk light overhead, and strain showed in the tight lines of his face.

Worry moved through me. If he lost control here or if they saw what he could look like…

I hesitated. He’d helped me earlier today. He’d touched my shoulder and I’d felt something leave him, like a wisp of magic that’d dulled the pain I’d felt. It didn’t make sense—this poisoning should be making me feel worse, not better—but it’d happened.

Maybe he needed help too.

I reached out and my fingers brushed his arm. His skin was cool, inhumanly so. When I touched it, I let a bit of magic pass to him.

Beneath my fingertips, his skin warmed.

He jerked away, alarmed. “What are you doing?” he demanded in a whisper.

Jace glanced back, floundering in the middle of his response to another of Rhonda’s questions.

I dropped my gaze away, not answering. There’d been a chance this would bring back the pain or that it’d make this poisoning worse. But instead, I just felt strange. Achy, but not in the same way as before. More stable too, like I wasn’t going to collapse as easily. The exhaustion had dulled as well.

“Belle?” Noah hissed.

I looked back to him.
