Chapter 24

The first creature attacked from the top of the club to my right, and I put one sword through its upper chest and split its head while I cut it in half with the other. Its remains went in several directions across the parking lot.

The second and third creatures to attack weren’t much different, and I barely had to move. Others came. I stopped counting, but after several minutes, the straightforward attacks stopped. I found myself standing amid a pile of stinking body parts.

I took advantage of the lull and moved to make sure I could keep the area around my feet clear just in case. Across the street, along the roofline, several more spectral figures stood more or less upright. Farther down the street was another, and I could feel more off to my left, though I couldn’t see them. Again, the guttural screech that Strigoi made when communicating split the silent night, and two figures rushed me from either side. This time the figures came at me bipedally.

I held my position as long as I could then dove into a roll at the last moment. The creatures were able to stop themselves before they collided, but it allowed me enough time to return to my feet and attack. The first creature moved fast enough to duck my swing, but my slice caught the other vampire’s right arm and severed it cleanly. I then stabbed my left sword into its face and violently wrenched the blade free. The leech hit the ground, flailing and screeching. The first vampire recovered and swung a bony, clawlike hand at my head. I ducked most of the impact, but its razor-like nails raked across the side of my face and head.

I stepped sideways, forced my shoulder into the creature’s exposed chest, and staggered it backward. I stabbed at it with my left sword, and the parasite batted the blade past, so I drew my right sword up and across its exposed flank, causing it to twist away in pain. Quickly reversing the motion, I drove the sword back down, jamming the blade through the creature from its neck to its abdomen, then yanked it free. The vampire’s upper body split into two down to its waist.

Damaged as they were, the creatures I’d fought earlier were still a long way from dead. They weren’t an immediate threat, but I still needed to destroy them.

“Damn tough bastards,” I said with a heavy sigh.

As I surveyed the carnage around me, a blinding green flash caught my right eye, and my first reaction was to move to cover—immediately. The second I began to run, a bullet ripped past where I was standing and tore a chunk of concrete out of the parking lot just behind me. I ran for the dumpsters, and using them as a springboard, I jumped to the roof of the club, where I quickly dropped to my stomach. Two more shots whizzed past as I ran, but I never felt an impact.
