Chapter Thirty-Seven
Baltimore, Maryland, USA
It took some time to filter a healthy number of agents down through the tunnel. Jennie confirmed the coast was clear down below, marveling at the corridor that opened up at the bottom of the long rung ladder, and soon two dozen agents were lined up and ready.
At Jennieâs instruction, a handful of agents swapped their rifles for their SI pistols. She commanded a unit to remain above ground to keep watch over the hole and the facility. Jennie didnât want their escape to be blocked should they need to use it.
Not that it would be a problem for her. But now she had mortals to worry about, too.
The corridors reminded Jennie of a hospital. There was a strange clinical smell, and the walls were painted in a white which had faded over the years. Strip lights lit the way as they approached the first set of doors on either side of the walls.
Jennie placed a finger on her lips and stood next to the door on her left. She signaled for Baxter to do the same to the other room. They pressed their ears against the door for a few seconds.
Silence.
Jennie counted down from three on her fingers, and when she was holding nothing but a fist, she and Baxter quickly passed through the doors with their guns aimed in front of them.
Two bedrooms, empty and vacant. A cot sat in the corner of Jennieâs room, the sheets disturbed and the bed unmade. A small washroom lay off the main wall, with a smattering of miscellaneous items scattered around.
Jennie exited the room. Baxter reported the same when he returned from across the hall.
They advanced down the corridor and cleared the next set of rooms, then the next, then the next. The bedrooms had all been vacated. After the fifth set of rooms, the corridor split into a crossroads, and all Jennie could see to her left, right, and in front were more doors.
âIs this some kind of fancy underground hotel?â Natalia whispered.
âNot one that Iâd want to collect loyalty points at,â Jack replied.
Jennie left four agents at the intersection and took the rest of them with her along the corridor straight in front. Her father had once told her, âIf in doubt, and youâve got no way of picking the best option, just make a decision. What difference will it make?â
When they reached another intersection after another five pairs of doors, Jennie left four agents standing guard and kept walking until they hit yet another intersection ten minutes later.
âWhat the hell is this place?â Clive grunted. âItâs like a labyrinth.â
âThatâs it,â Jennie exclaimed in an urgent whisper. She looked back at her team, aware that almost half of her agents were now stationed back along the corridor. âThe facility is trying to separate us. If we keep leaving people guarding, weâre going to have no one left. Itâs designed to confuse and ensure that no one can storm it.â
âYouâre saying that this is all planned?â Natalia asked, uncertain.
