REESE

He’s handing out freaking sandwiches.

Cats try not to be impressed by anyone, but Adrianna Scott won us over a long time ago. I expected her son to be a spoiled little shit, though. He’s not. He’s also not the powerhouse I was expecting. Samuel was the most dominant wolf I’ve ever met, and Kennedy said the new guy won in a fair fight—or as fair as it gets when he tries to take the high road and an ugly street brawler tries to cheat.

I would have offered him respect just for getting rid of that blight, but I didn’t expect to like him. He makes it damn hard not to, though. Every shifter in this pack obviously adores him. The pups treat him like friendly furniture and the submissives go out of their way to pat his wolf on the head. Power doesn’t earn you either of those.

They love him.

And he clearly loves the fuck out of Lissa, which isn’t going to hurt his standing with me or my cats either.

I sigh. It still isn’t going to be easy. My cat isn’t done trying to shred my insides, and I thought I was prepared for this visit. There are so many wolves missing, so many holes where friends once stood. I’m hearing snippets, small murmurs. Some are still around, although my cat’s not sure what kind of shape they’re in.

I’m sorely tempted to send my trackers to check, but sadly, tromping all over this alpha’s territory would violate my sense of how to treat a decent neighbor. I intend to have a very long conversation with him, though. After I’m done with the far more important ones.

The small pup in my lap turns furry and heads out on the dead run, chasing another wolf her size. Eliza drops down beside me, laughing. “I’m amazed she sat still for that long. Did you get any of that cookie or did she eat it all?”

I let her laughter soothe my cat. “I’m good. So are the cookies.”

Her head rests briefly on my shoulder. “It’s really good to see you here.”

I lean in. We were juveniles together, part of a group of friends who ran easily across packs and found food and a place to sleep when we needed one. “Where is everyone, E?”

She winces. “Some are around.”

Not nearly enough, but if their alpha can wait for that story, then I’ll damn well duct tape my cat to a tree and make him wait, too. Which is going to be one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. Nobody plots revenge like a bobcat—and one of the chief architects of the evil that happened here is still living.

I stroke Eliza’s hair gently, offering wordless comfort to her wolf and my cat. Which doesn’t last long. Her head lifts up off my shoulder, her eyes suddenly worried.

I turn, my cat getting a sniff of Kenny’s wolf before I see him. Which is good—I’m not sure I would have recognized him otherwise. He was the oldest in our juvenile cohort, but he doesn’t look it now.
