Horse marrow cavity volumes (MCV) are from Outram and Rowley-Conwy (1998:843, table 4, mean of three individuals). The unsaturated fatty acid data for caribou are from Meng and colleagues (1969:189, tables 1 and 2, double bond index column). Unsaturated fatty acid values for long bones are from the shaft portion. Unsaturated fatty acid values for phalanges correspond to the mean of both posterior and anterior phalanges. Carpals, tarsals, and talus were conferred the same unsaturated fatty acid values as the calcaneum. Following Jones and Metcalfe (1988), a marrow cavity of 1 mL was attributed to the carpals, tarsals, talus, and third phalanx.
