Troy didn’t say anything as they walked back to his car, parked in a secluded corner of a nearby lot. He was waiting for Laney to say something… to explain what had just happened. But she didn’t. Instead, they walked in stony silence, her expression giving nothing away.

Finally, Troy had had enough.

“Who was that guy?” The question came out rougher than he’d intended. More of a demand than a query. But who could blame him? He’d been thrust into a world where none of the old rules made sense and no one had seen fit to fill him in on the new ones. He was having to figure out the puzzle on his own and not all the pieces fit in a way he could understand.

That guy for example. As soon as he’d seen him watching them, Troy had felt the oddness—the otherness—about him. It was like all the hairs on the back of his neck had stood up at once, combined with a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach, and a small part of his brain yammered at him to run.

“No one to worry about.” Her curt, offhand dismissal did nothing for the chaos raging inside him.

He hadn’t managed to catch all of their conversation. It had been like he’d been listening to them through glass, but one thing was for sure…

“He was a Reaper. Wasn’t he?”

Try as he might to conceal it, his voice was rough with the edge of a growl. Jealousy filled him like a surge of lava through his veins. She’d said there were lots of Reapers, but how close were they all?

“Did you know him?” he demanded, yanking her around and pulling her up to collide with his larger body, his hard hand on her arm. “How well do you know him?”

His voice was filled with a full-on possessive growl. At first the guy had appeared to be an older, suited businessman, but he’d been around Laney enough to know that was some kind of Reaper camouflage. When he’d concentrated, he’d been able to see beneath it, and the other Reaper was a good looking, badass biker type with long, blond hair. Was that the type she went for? If so, he wasn’t anything close.

“What?” Surprise and the beginnings of outrage flowed across her beautiful face, which maybe should have been a warning to him. After all, pissing off something with literally no known predators was not a good long-term survival strategy.

“That’s what you think… after I accepted this?” she demanded and shoved her hand with his ring on it almost in his face. “No. I don’t know him. I don’t know anything about him other than the fact he’s a Reaper. I’ve never seen him before in my life.”

His brow creased, the green-eyed monster within backing down.

“So you Reapers don’t all know each other?”

As soon as the words left his mouth, he realized how dumb he sounded. That would be like asking if all English people knew the queen, or great-aunt Mary’s goddaughter who’d moved to Bath twenty years ago.
