Chapter eighteen

As her father and Thanatos left the room, Lira turned to her mother.

“They know. Someone out there knows,” she whispered and was instantly pulled into her mother’s arms.

Someone outside of her family now knew her secret.

A secret she had kept in check all her life. A secret that she’d never had to hide when she lived in the Underworld.

Living among humans had been difficult at first, but since they explained away any weirdness about her as a trick of the mind, she was able to use that to deflect any strangeness. She’d slipped a few times in the first decade, but she had it figured out now. Or so she thought.

Her brothers both resided in the mortal world, one of death and one of nature, and no one knew them as anything other than human.

A flash of light pulled her from her spinning thoughts, and her Aunt Hera stood before her, looking first at Lira then Persephone.

“Who do I need to kill?” Hera asked, her voice taking on a deadly seriousness.

Lira had used the spell Hecate taught her to keep her office warded since she soul-walked there frequently. Only people invited into her space could come in. It deterred away others until she opened the ward. Aramis was the next line of defense should someone make it that far. Something that hadn’t been an issue… yet.

“Are you alright?” Hera moved to stand in front of Lira, her forehead creased in concern.

She grimaced. "My classroom was also destroyed along with the labs." Pandora is walking around campus looking to spill blood.”

Lira chose not to mention that one other professor's office was destroyed. She didn’t want to think about Sam at all, but the admin staff she’d spoken to had said that the professor hadn’t been to the university for any of his classes since he showed up on her doorstep. A fact she was worried she would have to explain away to the police if Sam did not show back up soon.

She really didn’t want to think about if Thanatos had anything to do with Sam being missing.

Hera paced to the window before turning back to face her sister and niece. “You think this has anything to do with the odd illness Dani is dealing with?” she asked.

“I honestly do not know, but… a soul I was working on… it didn’t die. It…” Lira’s mind was jumbling the events. She couldn’t put the words in order, and pinching the bridge of her nose, she tried to focus.

It was all so hazy.

“I…” The words froze in her throat, and she was unsure why. She kept nothing from Aunt Hera, knowing she wouldn’t say anything to anyone else. The woman had a ‘What happens in Halcyon, stays in Halcyon’ mentality, but the words were stuck all the same. “I was dealing with a disturbed soul, and Thanatos found me. It came back… the man who had died came back to life before he disappeared into flames.”

Feeling her mother’s hand rub up and down her back, she watched as her aunt’s eyes narrowed in thought before she closed them.
