Chapter 6

They stepped through into a large, cavernous room. It was completely devoid of any decoration. There was a door on the other end, a reversed pentagram was etched into its metal surface. It glowed ruby red. In the center, about navel height was an antique-style keyhole.

“The symbol of Asmodeus,” Ashwatthama pointed out, gesturing to the door. “On the other side should be his throne room.”

“There’s no doorknob,” Inais noticed.

He went over and pushed on the door, but it didn’t budge.

“We must have to find the key that fits,” Inais mused.

Suddenly, the air shimmered all around them and keys materialized before their eyes. Their heads swiveled around, taking in the enormous number of keys floating around them.

“There’s no way we can try all of these,” Inais said, exasperated.

“We don’t have to try all of them,” Aysha finally spoke. “We just need to find the one that matches the keyhole. It’s obviously going to be an older-looking key, likely made of iron.”

As she said this, all the keys changed to look the same. Her brows furrowed in confusion.

“What the–” Inais and Aysha said together.

Aysha spun in a circle, scanning the lot of keys. They all had the same golden design with long, skinny shafts, and an open circle on the other end. A snicker sounded from somewhere, but Aysha couldn’t pinpoint the usherer.

A finger snap sounded out across the chamber and the keys started flying about, causing the group to duck and weave so as not to get hit.

“What is going on?!” Inais questioned, ducking as a key dove straight for his head.

Ashwatthama started swatting the keys like flies, sending them crashing to the ground. Aysha noticed one of the keys had a red pentagram on it, matching the symbol on the door. She dove towards it to snatch it up, but it flew from her grasp.

She pounded her fist on the ground in frustration. She looked back up, trying to spot it again. Another giggle echoed across the room. Aysha’s head whipped around, trying to find the source. She knew they weren’t alone, but she couldn’t spot anyone else.

“There’s a key with the same pentagram as the door. It’s the only thing that sets it apart from the others,” Aysha announced to Ashwatthama and Inais. “We need to find it.”

They nodded their understanding.

“I have a feeling that even if we catch it, we’ll still have our work cut out for us,” Ashwatthama stated, swatting more keys to the ground as they swarmed him.

Aysha narrowed her eyes, trying to scan through the raging storm of keys to find the being that she knew was watching them. Suddenly, the keys disappeared, leaving one hanging at the top of the ceiling of the massive room, too far away for any of them to reach.

“Aw c’mon!” Inais complained, throwing his hands in the air.

“Maybe I can shoot it down?” Ashwatthama suggested, already nocking an arrow.

He aimed and let loose the arrow. It whizzed straight for the key, and the group started to celebrate. But before the arrow could reach the key, it whipped around, flying back the way it came.
