Chapter 11

Mending Broken Bonds

Blood and battle, a healthy Korrathi diet!

-Raya, Korrathi Seer

“No!” Angelo yelled, his eyes filled with terror as he watched his friend plummet off the platform’s edge. Torek stood at his side, letting out a roar of pain as he watched his father disappear from view. tMany of the barbarian’s present began to cry out, either in anger or frustration. Darien just let his head hang low in defeat.

In a matter of seconds, a solemn silence fell over the men and women. In this battle, neither side had won. Their champions had fought valiantly but, in the end, both were lost to the mountain. The barbarians didn’t move… many of them were not ready to leave the peak, which had just become the final resting spot of their lost leader. As custom, they would stay and mourn their great leader.

Regret filled Torek’s heart. He had just watched his father plummet to his doom, and all over some archaic tradition! Why had he let him go through with it!

With nowhere else to channel his anger, Torek clenched his fists in rage and turned to face Darien O’Hara. “This is your fault,” he whispered, before giving the scion a shove toward’s the cliffs edge. Darien stumbled, teetering precariously near the edge of the precipice. Torek raised his hand, ready to give Darien a final deadly shove… but Vivian’s voice brought him pause.

“Holy shit!” her words pierced the silence, drawing irksome looks from many of the Korrathi. How could she bring such disrespect to a moment like this? A few seconds later, they noticed why.

A bloody-knuckled hand rose just above the edge of the platform, reaching out then slamming down, clinging to the icy stone. Another came shortly after, before finally the man’s full form began to rise into view. Rian Asher, battered and bloodied, pulled himself back over the platform’s edge, the muscle’s in his arms quivering as he fought for every inch. Darien and Angelo couldn’t contain their joy as they let out cheers of exhilaration. Vivian folded her arms over her chest and grinned.

The Korrathi were devastated, but they let the scions have their moment. Even Torek, who was intent on pushing Darien off the ledge, backed off. The duel had been a fair one and retaliating in that manner would only bring his people shame.

Then, out of nowhere, one of the barbarians began to join in… then another! Those that had remained quiet peered back towards the platform before beginning to cheer as well. Wrapped tightly in Rian’s legs was the unconscious body of Ganjrum!

In seconds, some of the Korrathi were scrambling to retrieve a long, widely cut plank of wood. The korrathi often used it as a makeshift bridge to retrieve the winner from the battle platform. Today, despite past traditions, two men would cross.

Rian laid flat on his back as he felt the rumble of boots rushed past him. He could feel the vibrations in the ground… it surprised him, really. The feeling in his toes had already left him, the skin a pale icy blue from the cold.
