CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Mona

It’s been two weeks since Joaquin and I became an us. We’ve spent time together when we can. Between both of our careers and our kids, we’re both busy. We do talk every night before bed as do the kids.

Sam’s called a few times to talk to Iris, but he hasn’t attempted to see her again. My daughter is leery of him now, and I hate it. If she decides that she doesn’t want to see him, then I’ll abide by her wishes.

I focus on the laptop and pay the bills for the studio. When no one else is here, that’s when I get the most work done. I love my sisters and couldn’t do this without them, but they love to distract me when I’m trying to do the work that they voted for me to do.

Once I pay the last one, I file all of the bills with their confirmation numbers written on them into their folders. I hear the chime of the front door opening and know that whoever it is has a key.

A moment later Miles is standing in the doorway. “Hey. What are you doing here?” I come around my desk and wrap my arms around him.

“I hit my word count for the day and knew you’d be here paying bills. How about we go out to lunch?”

I grab my phone and check my schedule. “Sure. My first client isn’t for a couple hours.” After shutting down my laptop, I grab my purse and follow Miles out. He leads me to his Jeep Cherokee and opens the door for me.

On the way to our favorite sandwich shop, he tells me the plot of the next book he’s going to be writing. Ever since he was little, he would make up these elaborate stories. Our parents really supported his craft. Hell, they’ve always supported us and our choices—even if they didn’t understand the whole tattoo thing at first.

We reach Happy’s and head inside, grabbing a table by the window. Our waitress takes our order and goes to get our drinks.

“How are things going with Joaquin?” He’s the only one of my siblings who knows what happened when Joaquin broke things off. I needed to talk to someone, and my brother was the best bet.

“Good, except we haven’t really had time together lately. Between the studio and Iris, I’ve been swamped. He’s been really busy too.”

Our waitress sets our drinks down in front of us. “If you want I can take Iris for the weekend, so you guys can spend some time together.”

“You’re sweet to offer. I’ll talk to him and see what he wants to do. I know his cousin usually watches Max, but he tries not to do anything without his son during the weekends. He likes to give Victoria breaks.” I love that about Joaquin. He doesn’t just dump his kid off on other people so he can have a social life.

“If he’s cool with it, I could take him too. From what you’ve said he sounds like a good kid.
