The beach was a future that was not just capitalism. A new world lay underneath the old one. Now, nearly sixty years on from that slogan, the beach was strewn with plastic and trash, sewage and oil. I was reading the poetry of Paul Éluard in French to try and learn the language, and was quite taken by a quote attributed to him, though he might have lifted it from Rilke: ‘There is another world, but it is inside this one.’ If the ecology of the world was dying but there was another world inside it, perhaps I was going to leave my handprints on the walls of 7-Eleven, Carrefour and Intermarché to be studied by anthropologists in the other world.
