Mom couldn’t leave work, even though I wanted her so bad—the way I always wanted her when I was sick or hurt or when things spiraled off into Disaster-ville. By the time Dad picked me up from school, my foot was too swollen to squeeze back into my sneaker. He helped me hobble out to the car. While he drove I snuck one of those shower-wipe-thingies out of my duffel and swiped it over my foot. That way I wouldn’t stink up the doctor’s office, too.

Everything was like déjà vu, which is what you say when you feel like you’ve already done something before, but this time I didn’t kick the table at all. I figured my feet had been through enough already.

“Abby McAdams, we meet again,” Dr. Camfield said. “Now, I love the color blue, but not on toes.”

I laughed a little, even though my bruised-up foot was hurting more every second.

“How did this happen?” she asked.

I explained about the relay race. Then I added something extra. “I fall a lot, actually. Not just during sports. Sometimes I even fall over my own feet. Just call me Abby McAdams, Super Klutz.”

I was trying to make a joke, but Dr. Camfield didn’t laugh. “I bet your feet have grown a lot lately,” she said.

“They did during the summer,” I said. “I got new sandals, and then in like a month, my toes were curling over the edge, and I had to get even bigger sandals.”

“Hands and feet undergo a rapid growth spurt at the start of puberty,” Dr. Camfield said. “It can take a while for the rest of your body to catch up.”

My hands? I thought. I held them up. Maybe they were looking kind of big.

“So that’s why many girls your age trip and stumble a lot,” she continued. “You’re not a klutz. You’re just getting used to taking up space in a different way. Now, I’m going to send you off for an X-ray of your foot, and then we’ll figure out what to do next.”

Dad couldn’t come with me for the X-ray part, but I tried to be brave, even though the machine was huge and freaky-looking. It was cool to see a picture of my bones. That’s how we found out that I had not one but two broken toes! Dr. Camfield told me that there are twenty-six bones in my foot, and I broke two of them. I was kind of excited, actually. Two broken toes were a much bigger deal than just one.

“The good news is that they’re hairline fractures,” Dr. Camfield was telling Dad. “Very clean; we almost can’t even see them on the X-ray. They should heal nice and quick—probably before Halloween. Hear that, Abby? You won’t even need a cast!”

“I won’t?” I asked. That was a major disappointment. I’d always wanted to get a cast, but not even breaking two different bones could make my dream come true.

“Nope!” Dr. Camfield said brightly. “You will need to wear a special boot, though.
