Chapter 12

“I need coffee,” Harper said as she joined Libby at the counter in Bouncing Beans.

“Rough morning?” Libby asked, already moving back around the counter to make the coffee.

“Between planning the summer program and getting the library back to normal, yeah.”

“I hear you loud and clear. Give me a minute and I’ll have coffee for you.”

“By the way, Marc is worried that you’ll actually poison his coffee,” Harper said, teasing Libby.

“I would never! But I did enjoy making him squirm a little. Did he apologize properly?”

“Yes, but you really didn’t have to do that.”

Libby dismissed that and said, “I really did. I’m pretty sure John had a little talk with him too about how things work on the island. Hopefully, he won’t ruffle too many feathers from now on.”

“You’re too much,” Harper said, laughing.

Libby smiled and finished making her coffee before she leaned on the counter and said, “Marc, huh? Since when are you two on a first name basis?”

“Since he apologized and bought me a cookie.”

“It doesn’t take much to please you.”

“I’m a simple girl.”

Glancing out the window while she waited, Harper saw Adam and Roger still studying the architecture plans. They must be going up and down the street to get different viewpoints for the project—or to harass business owners. Anger simmered under her skin again as she remembered her conversation with him earlier.

“Adam was at the library earlier with that architect. They were going over plans for the casino. Can you believe that?” Harper asked.

“You mean he’s still planning to go ahead with it?” Libby asked, handing over her coffee.

“That’s what it sounded like. I don’t think he’s planning to change anything or put the business plans off at all.”

“Huh. Makes you wonder what lengths he’d go to in order to get higher profits for himself,” Libby said.

“That’s what I was thinking. He also said something interesting about the newspaper article, almost like he knew more than most people.”

“Like maybe he’s behind the article instead of Lucas?”

“Or maybe he and Lucas were both behind it,” Harper suggested.

Libby nodded. “That makes sense. They both wanted the casino plan to go ahead. Let’s be honest, the library is the one factor they can’t buy out. So long as the library is there, businesses on this block can’t be bullied into selling.”

“That’s a good point. The library takes up a good portion of this side of the street. We’re the biggest stumbling block to the casino.”

“Discredit and disband the library, and they could have their casino.”

“Liam seemed to think Adam could be behind the murder for profit,” Harper said, giving her a quick rundown on what Liam said the other day.

“Wouldn’t Lucas’s wife inherit the business?” Libby asked.

“I don’t know. I guess it depends. I don’t know enough about that to make any guesses.”

“Why don’t you ask her?” Libby whispered, nodding her head towards the door behind Harper.

Turning slightly, Harper saw a stunning woman in a black lace dress that fell just shy of appropriate mourning attire at mid-thigh, black
