The marriage takes place, and next we catch up with Dorothea on her honeymoon in Rome, sobbing bitterly because she has just begun to understand what sort of man she has married: a dried-up depressive with no enthusiasm for the sights of Rome or for the company of his new bride. What’s worse is her dawning realization that he has not really begun the great book that she married him to help him write. When she makes the mistake of mentioning this, the barely bridled nastiness of her husband’s response—with its barbed adjectives (facile, ignorant, baseless, impatient), its reference to onlookers and chatterers, and its implication that Dorothea might be one of those facile, ignorant, impatient onlookers and chatterers who must be ignored by “scrupulous explorers” such as he—convinces us that we were right to fear for the future of this marriage. The defensiveness and aggression, however “reined in by propriety,” of Casaubon’s reply is exactly, we feel, how such a man would fight back and lash out when he felt challenged:
