The apartment complex on Zinnia Court is buzzing when we arrive. Since it’s rush hour and everyone is most likely getting home from work, that’s not unusual. And it actually works in our favor. I still have the key to Loralei’s apartment, and when I open the door, her neighbor pokes her head out into the hallway.

“Can I help you?” she asks us.

Mitchell flashes his badge, making me want to smack him. I could have just told her I’m a friend looking after the plants in the apartment while Loralei is on her honeymoon. But no. Mitchell has to whip out his detective badge to impress the ladies.

“Detective Mitchell Brennan.” I’ve noticed he usually provides his first name when speaking to women. “Do you live in that apartment right there?” He points behind her.

“Yes. Is something wrong? Is Loralei in some sort of trouble?” The woman looks panicked.

“How well do you know Loralei?” I ask.

The woman shrugs. “I’ve lived here for two years now. Loralei and I run into each other from time to time. She let me take a shower at her place when the landlord was having mine repaired. That’s about it. Is she in trouble?” she repeats, lowering her voice since we aren’t the only people in the hallway.

“No. I’m Piper Ashwell. I’m a private investigator. This is my father, Thomas Ashwell. We work together. And this is Detective Brennan, as you know. We were working a case nearby, and I promised Loralei I’d water her plants while she was away, so we stopped in.”

The woman puts her hand to her chest and sighs. “Phew. I thought maybe something awful happened one apartment over from mine. I watch too many crime shows on TV, and my mind gets carried away with me sometimes.”

“When was the last time you saw Loralei?” Dad asks. “You were obviously concerned. Does that mean you haven’t run into her in a while?” He’s so good at playing it cool. Mitchell should really take notes.

“Oh, um...” She sucks her lower lip into her mouth as she thinks. “I guess it was sometime early last week. Before the wedding. I wasn’t invited, but like I said, we’re acquaintances not friends.”

“Did you see her in passing?” Dad asks. “In the hallway like this?”

“Yeah, I had just gotten home from work and she was on her way out. I assume to meet her fiancé for last-minute wedding stuff.”

“Did she say anything to you?” Mitchell asks.

The woman shrugs. “‘Hello. How are you?’ You know, typical stuff. Why? Are you sure there’s nothing going on here?”

Way to make her suspicious again, Mitchell.

“No, Detective Brennan just has trouble conversing normally with people. He’s the job, you know.” I clamp my hand down on his shoulder. “Always trying to interrogate everyone.” I lower my voice and lean toward her. “He has some social issues.”

Mitchell’s stare pierces the side of my head, but I pretend not to notice.

“Well, I better water those flowers. Loralei will never forgive me if I let her precious plants die.
