scholarly opinion is generally agreed that the order of Cluny reached its apogee during the abbacy of St. Hugh . . . and began its decline as a result of the misrule of his successor, Pontius of Melgueil. . . . It is the purpose of this article to subject the accepted view of Pontius’ career to scrutiny and to present an alternative interpretation of the known facts. (195)19

However, there is a crucial difference between White’s approach in “Pontius of Cluny” and his approach in his later work. Writing on Cluny, White purported to be offering an interpretation of what really was the case in the twelfth century. The same is true of his dissertation, completed at the University of Michigan in 1955, wherein he depicts an opposition between two types of papal “leadership ideals”—a “bureaucratic” ideal, launched by Gregory VII and carried to an extreme by Urban II, and a “charismatic” ideal, which was embodied in ascetic monasticism.20 In contrast, in his later writing White’s overwhelming focus is on interpreting interpretation itself.
