CHAPTER 16

EMRYS

I let the hot water continue to run as I gripped the sink with both hands staring into the mirror. The steam fogged up the mirror around the bottom edge and was spreading upward, distorting my image.

Morrigan and Cian had returned with a magic magnifier that allowed Druantia and I to wake up our son Luke. I lifted my hand up and watched it tremble. I put both shaky hands back under the water and splashed my face.

I had Druantia here, in this realm with me, and now a son. In the past day, I had only known terror that clawed at me from the inside. Whether it was watching my loved ones in agony and fighting for their lives while I sat helplessly by; or watching Luke battle for his life in the deep druid sleep while Druantia agonized, I was shaken down to my core.

Morrigan and Cian had debriefed Druantia and me from their time in the spirit world with the four main gods. Morrigan recounted her silent conversation with Lir. I could recall every word said in that conversation, but the memory was hollow as it bounced around my mind. I had to get control over the fear that gripped me at the moment. I felt numb, fractured, and distorted.

I turned the water off and dried my face with a towel. I could hear Druantia and Luke talking in the next room. Her voice was light and airy. Luke’s was dry, trying to get a rise out of his mother with no success.

I opened the door from the bathroom when Druantia drug me into their heated discussion. “Will you please tell Luke that under no circumstances is it OK to put milk into tea. I don’t care what kind of tea it is. It’s just not right.”

Luke sat at a table with a pile of pancakes in front of him and a hot cup of tea, which I gathered had milk in it. He took a sip of it, and with a flourish, he said, “This is chai tea, and it is traditionally served with milk.”

“Then it’s a stupid kind of tea and not really a tea at all if it requires milk,” huffed Druantia.

“Clearly, your mother has solved the issue,” I said, giving his shoulder a squeeze.

He looked up at me and asked, “Well, what kind of tea is it that you like?”

“Coffee,” I said, pulling my boots on.

“Where are you headed to?” asked Druantia. “We’re off to save the world shortly. You need to have something to eat.”

Luke laughed, shaking his head at Druantia’s tone, sounding as if she were telling us it was time to go on vacation.

I kissed Druantia on her cheek and answered, “I’m just going to check on Morrigan.”

I heard them continue their bantering about tea as I left the room, which left me with a smile as I sought out my friend.

I used my magic to seek her out. She sat perched on top of a bluff looking out over the forest, writing in her journal.
