Although even this article betrayed Chandler’s exhaustion, it provoked an aggressive reaction from Hollywood. ‘Have been blackballed at all the best bistros and cat-houses,’ he beamed to a correspondent shortly after its publication. Atlantic Monthly liked the article, however, and asked Chandler to cover the Oscar ceremony for them. What, he asked of the ceremony, was everyone celebrating? In prose literature we not only lack style but we lack the educational and historical background to know what style is. . . . Our novels are transient propaganda when they are called ‘significant’, and bedtime reading when they are not. But in the motion picture we possess an art medium whose glories are not behind us.
