Both chemical and physical aspects of food receive regular mention in dental health promotion literature. In 1995 the Australian Dental Association made ‘Good Food, Great Teeth’ their slogan for Dental Health Week.3 Besides advocating the benefits of raw natural food, the campaign specifically targeted the adverse effects of junk food for schoolchildren and the hazards of sugary drinks for nursing infants. Progressively, such messages hit home, with resultant decrease in need for dental treatment. Dentists continue to accentuate prevention. They may supplement their income with the sale of toothbrushes and dental floss but never packaged junk food.
