Chapter Twelve

For days after the announcement of their forthcoming marriage, Merewyn felt as if she was walking two feet above the ground, she loved Luc De Malvais, and now it was in the open. They took every chance to be together, to touch, kiss or hold hands. They sat in the orchard and talked, long into the warm late summer evenings, about their plans for the future. Luc intended to stay in the north of England for the next few years until Bardolf, Alain’s half-brother, arrived from Europe, but they would visit his mother in Brittany during this time. He shared his dreams with her about breeding huge part Breton-part Arab Destriers like Espirit when they returned to his estates in Brittany, intelligent, resilient, brave warhorses for the future. Merewyn shared her wish for lots of children; she could see a large, happy family, and Luc watched her blush delightfully, as she said it. He laughed, pulling her into his arms. ‘I promise I will work hard every night to fulfil that wish, my lady.

Merewyn laughed with him but then became serious for a moment and gazed at him in a perplexed way. ‘What would you have done, Luc, if your Patron said no,’ she asked, raising her large deep green eyes to his.

Luc paused and stared off into the distance taking several minutes before answering. ‘You have to understand, Merewyn, I am a Norman knight first and foremost, we have a code of honour, and no matter how much I love you, I owe allegiance and loyalty to my Patron, I have to defer to his decisions in all things. I would have been devastated if he had refused my request, but I am sure I could have talked him round eventually. Let us not think about things that did not happen; let us look to our future instead;’ he then set about kissing away her concerns, leaving her breathless and happy.

They had not made love again, as Luc wished them to wait for their wedding night; however, they kissed and caressed constantly. Merewyn, who was new to lovemaking, had loved every minute of their time in the wheat field, and she longed to be with him again. She imagined them at night, lying fully naked in bed, his muscular body covering hers. She smiled with delight at the thought of their entwined bodies, with him deep inside her. Then she blushed again when he asked her why she was smiling. However, the amused look in his eyes told her that he knew just what she was thinking, and she shyly laughed as well.

There had not been a sound or sighting of the rebel group for several weeks, and Luc began to wonder if the extra patrols had worked, that the rebels had left the area because things had become too difficult for them. He had ensured that things were more secure at Ravensworth; the Motte and Bailey castle finished, and Gerard had taken up residence on the top floor of the impressively sizeable wooden Donjon.
