The secret back room in Freddy’s Fiery Grill and Steakhouse was a lot busier than last time I was here. At least forty witches, shamans, and elementalists had spread throughout the room, sitting or standing in groups. Agitated chatter filled the air.

I had wondered if I should take this chance to step up and reassure them, but then decided to stand at the wall and listen instead. The Elders would make an official announcement any second, and I didn’t want to send any mixed messages.

Also, I didn’t feel like the Elders spent enough time just listening to their people. Or if they did, it wasn’t in a way that I noticed. In the last ten minutes, I had heard that many other groups had found just as many corpses, were too late to save people, and occasionally encountered vamps and werewolves still fighting.

The mood was grim. Everyone was upset, and in the short pauses between arguments, their eyes looked blank and sorrowful. They were worried about their future. They didn’t know what would happen next. Not just with the werewolves, but to all of us. They all heard stories about the Night of Sacrifice long ago, where witches and vampires slaughtered each other, where not even children were safe.

Eventually, Allard stepped up to the podium and tapped on the mic. “Welcome everyone, we are going to start now.” He waited for a few moments, but the room quieted down immediately. Tension and uneasiness hung in the air.

“First off, thank you so much for helping out and volunteering so quickly. I hope none of you are injured and everyone made it back out of the forest safely. Now, Mariah with a status update.”

He retreated to the whiteboard at the wall where Aaron, Manfred, and two other Elders waited while Mariah took the place at the podium.

She stood there, perfectly straight and neatly dressed in a navy blazer, and let her eyes wander over the crowd. “Dear friends. Since the werewolves first started acting out, we have tried to keep the peace. We have talked to them, even brought them together with the vampires to negotiate a peaceful solution. And yet, it seems all our efforts still haven’t been enough. Not only are they unwilling to stop killing each other, they have not refrained from attacking us, too. Thus, starting right now, we will not actively engage with them anymore.”

She let her words sink in and watched the mumbling crowd for a few moments. “But don’t mistake this for not caring. Behind the scenes, we will continue doing our best to defuse the situation. Of course, you are still allowed to help out, but we urge you to stay neutral and think of your own safety first. That’s it from our side, any questions?”

Overlapping chatter immediately filled the room, but quieted down when Mariah pointed at a guy who had raised his hand. “You.”

“What are they even fighting about?” the man asked.

“They say it’s freedom. They don’t want to be controlled and watched over by the vampires.
