THIRTEEN

Brodie linked their fingers and pulled her off the kitchen counter. Zara reached for her purse when he began to drag her toward the exit, but she didn’t manage to snag it because he was moving at quite a pace.

Leading her through passages, he opened a door and ran up two flights of stairs without letting her go. When they got to the top, he opened another grand door and tugged her into a long hallway. Switching their course, he guided her through another door and then swung a left into a narrow corridor with only one door at the end.

Glancing back at their wake, she kept advancing headlong in the direction Brodie towed her in. “I hope there’s not a fire,” she said, knowing she’d be lucky to find a way out let alone the kitchen.

He stopped at the end of the corridor and pressed the print of his thumb into the center of a regal doorknob, which had the same fingerprint recognition pad on it that she’d seen in other parts of the building.

“If there’s a fire, we go out the window,” he said, before opening the door and drawing her forward to let her enter first.

The huge wooden framed bed was situated in front of a recessed double window. There were a couple of doors to the left and a seating area to the right, where there was an entertainment center done in the same finish as the bed.

She was about to turn and compliment him on his dark, masculine decor when the daunting snick of a heavy lock sliding into place made her comfort disperse into dread. When she whirled around, Brodie was within breathing distance, so close to her that the wall of his chest blocked her view.

“I said you were naughty,” he said. Scooping a hand under her hair, he twined his fingers in her locks and pulled her head back at an angle so harsh that it made her neck ache. “I was right... You disobeyed me.”

“Yeah, and look how great that worked out for you,” she said, matching his snarl.

“You made a big mistake coming here.” With a wide stance, he kept her legs between his and walked her backwards in the direction of the bed. He offered her no help when she lost her footing, so Zara had to grab on to him to keep herself semi-upright. “Everything in this house belongs to me, and now that includes you,” he sneered. “No one will look for you here. Haven’t you heard? The world thinks I’m dead and this place abandoned. This is the end of the world for you, baby.”

Something as solid and rotund as a log hit the dip of her spine and she exhaled her trepidation when she groped behind her and found she was pressed into the frame at the foot of his bed. There was no way to get away from this man, no way out of the room. She was his prisoner. Instead of being terrified, a quake of excitement tremored through her.
