CHAPTER 33

City of Chateau

Abraham Wilson arrived at the corner of Highways Eleven and Eighty early on Sunday morning and began checking the open businesses for surveillance footage. He began on the right side of Highway Eleven and worked his way to the northeast. It took him two hours to view footage from seven businesses with cameras that faced the highway. Nothing jumped out at him from what he viewed. Dozens of dark-colored pickups drove by, and he made notes on each one he saw, but none of them looked promising.

Abraham drove across the highway and began working his way back to the southwest. All of the restaurants along that stretch of highway were on the right side and most of them were open, so he figured he’d retrieve lots more footage. He just didn’t know how helpful they would be.

He didn’t waste as much time viewing the footage during his subsequent contacts. Instead, he focused on obtaining copies to be viewed later. By eleven o’clock, he had reached the last business on that side of the highway—it was a convenient store at the corner of Eleven and Eighty—and he paused when he stepped outside, wondering what to do next. All morning as he worked, he had been thinking about the game camera he’d mounted to a tree near the water tower. He didn’t want to check it too soon, because it might spook the suspect if he or she returned to the area while he was checking it, but he was curious to know if the killer had returned to the scene. He had set the camera up at night, but he thought he had a good handle on the area. If he was correct, he should be able to park somewhere northeast of the wooded area and approach the camera from the rear and in the shadows of the trees.

Nodding, he made up his mind and headed for his unmarked cruiser. He pulled onto the highway and sped off, his mind racing as he did so. What would he find on the camera? Would he catch the suspect returning to the scene, or would he find it blank? He reminded himself not to be overly excited if he checked it and saw that it had recorded some files. After all, they were in the swamps, and there was an unlimited amount of critters stalking around at night.

Abraham didn’t pass any cars as he headed north, but that wasn’t abnormal for a Sunday in that area. He slowed as he approached the water tower and surveyed the area carefully. There were no cars and no pedestrians that he could see, so he continued past the patch of woods and pulled into the entrance to a trailer park just over the bridge. He stepped out of his cruiser, secured it, and headed back in the direction from which he had come, but on foot.

He was in good shape and made the return trip at a brisk pace. Once he was back on the opposite side of the small bridge, he immersed himself in the thick patch of woods.
