CHAPTER

54

That evening, Edward brought Hayate to the estate.

“This is an excellent horse. Tokimune is a generous man. He may look like a coward, but he has more guts than I thought. He didn’t look at all scared during the battle,” Alan said, unusually complimentary of Tokimune.

Edward expressed Tokimune’s gratitude to his men.

“You saved Lord Tokimune’s life, so it is only natural you received the katana and horse. Besides, let’s say you saved our lives as well,” Morimune said suggestively.

“Tell me so I can understand,” Edward said. “Your words and phrasing are sometimes strangely incomprehensible.”

Morimune pretended to think for a moment.

“The mastermind behind that attack was Ujiakira of the Hojo Clan. Just thinking of Lord Tokimune being murdered and Ujiakira becoming regent of the shogunate makes my stomach turn.”

“So, the country is still not unified?”

“That’s not the case,” Morimune hurriedly denied. “All Kamakura samurai willingly obey the head of the Hojo Clan as their leader.”

“What happened to Ujiakira?”

Morimune fell silent.

“Did you kill him? He was probably Tokimune’s uncle,” Alan, who had been quietly listening, interrupted.

“If the country is in chaos, we won’t be able to fight against Yuan. The samurai leadership must be secure. That is Lord Tokimune’s first concern.”

“So, you killed them all?”

Morimune was silent.

“That Lord Tokimune is a dubious man,” Zafir said once Morimune had gone. “He was so calm during the attack because he knew reinforcements would rush in.”

“You must be jesting. He was simply so scared he couldn’t even move,” Alan mocked.

“Those extra troops Tokimune had stationed ahead were conveniently armed to the teeth. He had them lying in wait in case we betrayed him on the hunt. Luckily their presence ended up being incredibly helpful to us in the unforeseen circumstances of the attack.”

Alan listened to Zafir with his mouth half open. Edward recalled what Tokimune had told him that afternoon. He certainly knew how to read and understand men’s hearts.
