Chapter Forty Three
A Healing
After much travelling across the realms, the assembly came to the outskirts of the working town of Skyfawr, interpreted as âThe big skyâ. It was an industrious little hub, filled with markets and stalls, to attract custom from neighbouring areas. Colourful huts and stores, a large stream wound through the centre of Skyfawr that eventually fed into a huge river named the Ryygier. While parents toiled, the youngsters marvelled at fish, stoats and water birds.
It was also the home of Oona, the wife of the departed Vaangrad, who had turned to Alatar and left her. Abandoning their marriage, leaving Oona to manage the popular stall alone. She knew in the end that she had a lucky escape. She thanked the spirits that she had no children by him. The ambitious, but cold-hearted Vaangrad had been left in charge of the Takers tower while Alatar had set out to dispense with Ramona once and for all. It was Theonyra, the stone King who called out as the throng marched on, in need of decent food and rest.
âThere! There is Skyfawr. Do you see the outline of the beautiful chapel?â
Princess Mahreuben, hand in hand with Uzaleus, her beloved Prince, beamed.
âGreat grandfather, well seen. Now let us get Ramona there, for the help she needs.â
Mahreuben gestured to James, âWe are nearly there James. Try not to worry. She will be well cared for as Theonyra says.â
âI really hope so Princess, she is still feverish. Come on Jude son, one last big effort.â With that, father and son lifted the makeshift stretcher and strode forward towards Skyfawr under the pink sky of the early evening. The two would not accept a rest or have anyone else carry the young wizard.
They knew the men and elves would do so with great care, but as Ramonaâs father and brother, they had come all the way with her, with mother Ruth constantly at their side and cooing softly to her during the food and drink stops. Holding her close. Being her mother.
Ramona now mostly slept silently, but had previously mumbled a lot. She had been a baby, tottering happily with her parents and then fast-tracked by the ethereal spirits into a young woman. A growth acceleration, it was called here. She was chosen to face this new menace. Though her babbling during this sleepy fever had distressed those who loved her. All manner of voices. A baby laughing or crying, a toddler calling joyously, âAgain, again!â. A young studious child.. âIâll make you proud mum.â
A teenager sobbing.. âI want to see my friends. I want to go to school. I donât understand.â She had rambled her way through her rapid changing, to the heartbreak of her mother. She was talking in her sleep about her life that might have been.
âAlatar. He has taken my daughterâs life. Look at her, our baby.â James and Jude bowed their heads solemnly. To look at Ramona now, lay on a stretcher in the elven clothing, originally intended for Ruth, you would see a beautiful young woman, just sleeping.
