Chapter Twenty-Seven
I blew through chores the next morning and parked my truck at Hattieâs house. I ran around back to find the RV empty. He couldnât have gotten far without a vehicle. I hoped to God that I wouldnât find an empty bourbon bottle in the RV and have to dredge the pond to find his drunken carcass. He had some explaininâ to do first.
âBuck.â I scanned the yard. âBuck.â
The back door to the house opened, and Hattie stuck her head out. âHeâs in here.â
I blew out a breath and my heart rate dropped to within normal range.
âBefore you say anything, I invited him in for breakfast.â She waited for an acknowledgment before she let me in.
Buck sat at the table and looked up with a mouthful of bacon, eggs, and hash browns. He gave me a quick nod.
âCan I get you some breakfast?â Hattie asked.
âMaybe just a cup of coffee if you have one.â
I took a seat at the table across from Buck, and Hattie set a steaming cup in front of me.
I took a sip and looked at Buck. âHowâd you sleep last night?â
âBest sleep Iâve had in a week.â
Hattie pulled out a chair. âI told him he can stay as long as he wants.â
I looked from Hattie to Buck. âDonât get too comfortable. They might be holdinâ a cell in Fremont with your name on it.â
âDillon. Why would you say such a thing?â
I pointed across the table. âMaybe you should ask him.â
Buck swallowed hard. âI told ya, I didnât do nothinâ.â
âTell me some more. Like how you got yourself fired.â
âIâm sure Seth already told you his version.â
âI want to hear yours.â
I waited while he finished the last couple of bites from his plate. He appeared to be stalling while he made up a story. It didnât look like heâd be much help. I took a sip of coffee and glanced at Hattie, but her expression was unreadable.
âWell?â
âWhatever he told you, I didnât do it. Iâve got his number now, so he wants me gone.â
âBuck, what does that mean?â Hattie looked almost as interested as me.
âIt means heâs the one who poisoned the horses.â
âSo, you donât think it was the Whitehawks that poisoned the horses?â
âNot anymore.â
âHow do you know that?â
âI overheard him talkinâ on the phone. I think heâs fixinâ to do it again.â
âThatâs a pretty strong accusation. What did you hear?â
âHe said he would take care a you and Jenny Lee one way or another.â
âWho was he talking to?â
âThat I donât know.â He looked at Hattie. âCan I get another cup a coffee?â
Hattie nodded and left the table.
âCan you put a little somethinâ in this one?â
âIâve got some fresh cream.â
Buck shook his head. âI was thinkinâ more like a shot a whiskey.â
âWhat do you think he meant by take care of us?â
âWell, I donât think he meant readinâ you a bedtime story and tuckinâ you in every night.â
Hattie set a fresh cup of coffee in front of him. âBe nice, Buck. Heâs just tryinâ to help.â
âSethâs tryinâ to drive you two off.
